gas pedal/engine failsafe mode/2000 S type
I got the engine failsafe mode error message a couple of days ago. Mechanic using a code reader says that the pedal switch is the problem. I took a look on ebay to see what it looks like but can't quite see how it is mounted on the car.
I thought I might remove it and give it a cleanup or perhaps wd40 it but I would like to have some idea of what is holding it onto the car before I start.

Hi Bob and JagV8.
I wasn't planning on replacing the pedal switch, just cleaning all contacts, etc. I was reading about the brake pedal switch when this snag first showed up and one of the solutions was to douse the switch in wd40. The mechanic [who works in a reliable, non-Jaguar garage] told me that it was the accelerator pedal switch that was giving the error message but he did not tell me the actual codes and I didn't have the sense to ask for them. I am not planning to replace the pedal until I have had a go around with the current insitu part.
I am planning a 200km trip on Sunday to get together with some relatives and attend an English car show. Should I be worried about this message. I have been ignoring a CATS system fault message since I bought the car two years ago but I don't want to be cavalier about the message if there are implications for the future. It is showing as an amber light message which means the car is driveable still. I am trying to work up a code reader for the CATS system fault and now for this new snag message but haven't felt any need to get an urgent fix to date. Am I being too complacent? Car runs like a clock!

The plastic pedal assy is held in place with a few fasteners to the bulkhead.
It will only take a few minutes the remove the assy.
I don't think there are any user-serviceable parts in the assy.
I replaced dozens of those pedals when the cars were NEW. There was a TSB about the pedal making a 'creaking' noise and bothering customers. An updated pedal assy was issued to correct the fault.

Thanks Bob,
I will give it a try after I return from Victoria and see what I can see. The car is eighteen years old so it only figures that contacts could be getting dirty over that length of time. Your description of the job and the pictures I have printed from my downloaded manual should give me enough information to proceed.
