You may be able to adjust the J gate lever by removing the center console for access. It sounds to me like its just out of adjustment. There is a cable on the passenger side of the gate that runs don to the transmission, and there are 2 nuts centering the cable on a bracket, loosen and tightened the nuts to move the cable in the desired direction.

You can find out by using the site's search feature, or google. You could get jtis, and should. Why not do those and start with the advice already given, then report back after doing it.

The console is easy, the wood trim around the J gate pops off as it is held on with clips. then to removed the arm rest console "cubby" it is held by two screws, then it pops up and out. You then can pop up the leather piece that goes around the center console by J gate, and slide it back from the dash once its poped up.

Im not sure why its acting like it is when you are pressing the sport button.
