Had an interesting problem happen with my wife’s 05 S-type. After taking a 300+ mile trip, we got to our hotel. When we got back in the car the gear selector would not move out of park, no matter what I tried. Having an F-150, and being able to easily get under my truck. I tried on the S-type which I found out is impossible. I did find a small bolt under the car, which I kept. The car is still under warranty so I called Jaguar road service to get it towed to the local dealership. After checking out the car the service manger told me that in was missing a small bolt, and of coarse they did not have it in stock. I show them the bolt that I had in my pocket, and as luck would have it,itwas the missing bolt. The service manager told me that this is a problem with Jaguars (I don’t know if meant all jags or only S-types) and he went on to tell me “he does not understand why Jaguar has recalled the cars to fix the problem”. The fix was fairly easy, a little thread lock on the bolt and all done. I would like to know if anyone has had this happen to then, and if so what was the fix. And if you have not had this happen, it might be something good to look into

Snook your problem is different. The ramp on the parking pawl is too agreesive. There is a tsb to fix that. Takes about 4 hours and some replacement parts in the trans.
2003 on S and 2004 on XJ have the same problem as Genius said. The fix is to locktight the bolt back in. We have 3 or 4 a week. Easy fix.

I'd love to know the location of that small bolt to do a little preventive lock-tighting....If there's a drawing, description,or TSB, could it go to conipc@aol.com?
TIA

I experience the locked shifter and have been able to correct it with applying the parking brake before shifting into park as my driveway is on an incline. However when I shift from reverse to drive I experience a slight hesitation and slight jerking motion (if my foot is on the accelerator)prior to the vehicle moving forward, and onlywhen making the initial shift(from park or reverse) to drive.
Can this be corrected by the bolt tightening suggested earlier, the gear shiftassembly fix (which Iam told runs about $1,200) or is this another problem altogether?

there is a transmission adaption clear procedure. I will try and post it tomorrow. Easy to do yourself. It will cure the delay putting it into gear....assuming you have a 2000-2002 S.

As you suspected I have a 2002 Jaguar S type Sport. I would be interested in other issues I should be on the lookoutfor with the car.

i had the same problem on a x reg , stype 3ltr auto.
i was parked on an incline , and the gear lever would budge.
i got took home on a flatbed. with being parked on the incline it would allow the j gate lever to come out of park. i have since learned that a slight nudge from the rear to level the car will solve this problem. and it does.

Hi... is this the same for an xk8?? I have a 97 xk8 and after having a dead battery, the shifter was locked. I replaced the battery and it worked for a while, however now it is locked in park and even with the good battery I cannot get it to release into any other gear. As a temp fix just to move the car I detached the shift cable from the rotating part of the tranny and moved it by hand. I am getting a gearbox failure error now on the dash?? thanks in advance for any help.
