Welcome to the forums David,

I've removed your duplicate of this post. I'll leave it to the S-Type experts to advise on these technical issues.

On the "clunk," best get the car up on a rack to check for loose/worn suspension components. As far as the odd shifting pattern, the S-type was fitted with two different transmissions during its production life; start of production thru 2002.5, was a 5 speed Ford unit and from that point to the end of production was a 6 speed ZF unit. What model year is yours, how many miles are on the car and has the transmission ever been serviced... ?

AT 98K, if the transmission has not been serviced, it is long overdue. Make sure that you use the correct ATF, Jaguar branded or ZF lifeguard-6, and not some purportedly "multi-brand" brew and says it covers a range of vehicles.

Welcome David1960!
Please get familiar with the search function as all your problems have been posted before.
Really is a lot of info already posted as these cars have been on the road for many years now and pretty much all the problems have been revealed and solved some time ago.

Also use Mercon SP for the transmission. This is the exact same fluid as Lifeguard6 but is red and bottled in Houston,Tx.
Way cheaper and much easier to get.

In regard to your clunking, I found that the bushing the strut bolted to was deteriorated on my car to the point it would knock and rattle at low speeds. You can buy just the bushing and press it in to the old control arm or since you're in there, replace the control arm itself to get new bushings at either end as well.

It's a good idea to get it in the air and check swaybar endlinks, control arm(both upper and lower) and strut mounts as well.
