gearbox fault
Hello guys. Today my Jag showed me Gearbox fault notification, but nothing unordinary happens. The car runs well and stuff. So the first thing i do is, pull over, restart the car - no notification. Happened 2 hours later thoug. And when doing speeds over 120 kp/h if i dont press the Gas all the way the car shifts very jerky. Any advise ?

I've been having similar issues for months. It seemed to get stuck in 3rd gear once on the freeway, but otherwise always runs fine. You can get a cheap OBD reader to check the codes. I get code P0783, which seems to relate to TSB JTB000722. The OBD reader can clear the code for you as well. I clear it and it comes back every couple of weeks. The TSB says that a reflash of TCM may help with our issues. However, I called the Jaguar of North Scottsdale dealer today and they said that with 105k miles, a reflash may cause the transmission to get stuck in a gear and not come out. I have never heard of this before so maybe someone else can verify if this is true.
It looks like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place and will have to live with this code and clearing it every couple of weeks, not to mention that I can never reflash my software?

Guys be careful here! We are talking about two very different transmission setups.
Angel; You have a 2000 S Type it has the Ford 5 speed transmission without a separate TCM.
desertcat; You have a 6 speed ZF automatic transmission that DOES have a separate TCM. I also would get a different dealer! Jaguar recommends flashing the TCM so I can't see why a dealer said something so wrong? Have you serviced the ZF properly because at 105K miles you are way overdue! You could have something as simple as low fluid.
Please post any error codes as you said it shows a gearbox fault. The Ford transmission is much more common and much cheaper to repair. Plus it can be massively upgraded if you want. The Ford transmission can be built to hold over 1000 HP.

Thanks for the reply tbird6. I just realized Angel has a 2000. The TSB I mentioned above applies to 2003-2005 S-type. Sorry about that.
To answer your question, when I first got the P0783 code a couple of months ago, the first thing I did was change the transmission oil, filter, gasket, and replaced the valve body sleeve, that was coincidently starting to leak. The old oil looked clean. However, i still get the code even after the oil change.
I may have to try a different Jag dealer but the only other one in AZ is in Tucson, 2 hours away.

Angel - could be any of a few causes but one would be a failing battery. It's used to provide the high peak currents for the injectors and coils so needs to be up to it. How old is it?
Could also be an air leak, or other engine issue as they often upset the gearbox and that's the problem that gets reported.
Well worth checking for codes of course. And fuel trims.
