Looks right to me.

Also, there's a bit more room in the engine bay to work on the 3.0 I expect.

The weak points (DCCV, cooling system plastic and so on) are not disasters and affect all the cars.

Thanks for all the input fellow Jag lovers. I will let you know when and if she does end up with one. I will look for an 8 but they do seem hard to come by.

John Fox,

Denver's coach is also named John Fox. That was Bacardi 151's joke. The real question is whether or not Manning's fused neck can survive the intentional pounding he will take with most tacklers looking for ways to attack his neck without getting flagged, ejected, and fined. If he indeed plays, the refs will create a new set of "Peyton Rules" to protect him. The NFL will deny it, of course, but those rules will be in effect....

I admire Manning for wanting to play again at age 36 (I continued to play football beyond my 42nd birthday after multiple knee surgeries and two ruptured Achilles tendon surgeries which led to very difficult and painful rehab requirements and still hamper my flexibility and mobility 16 years after age and injuries forced me to quit the game I love), but I fully realize the physical price he will pay if he continues to do so. I hope he realizes that price as well....

John there are a couple late model (07~08's V8s) on Ebay right now. they appear to be really well kept vehicles. Some still have warranties.

John,
There's nothing wrong with the 6. As previously mentiioned, they do have the IMT O-ring issue the 8's don't have. Not sure if they fixed that between 06-08 or not...anyone know? I know our 05 had the hard, shrinking yellow ones from the factory.

When shopping for our first S-type, we drove a 4.2L. Would've bought it if the seller would've come down to our perceived market value - but not because it was a V-8, because it was a very clean low-mileage car in a beautiful Zircon blue. In all honesty, if your friend is going to drive around with traction-control engaged, I assert she will notice scant, if any difference between the two, EXCEPT the fuel economy. There, the difference is also slim, but noticeable. The "V-8 gets better economy" argument would be plausible if the 3.0L were woefully underpowered for the car and you had to flog it everywhere you went - but it's not. It will quickly and easily invoke the traction-control when launching from a full-stop.

Not sure this applies to the two types used in the S-type - haven't studied the controls in-depth - but in general, if a Jag engine experiences some problem leading to an overheating condition...and if your friend shares the characteristic with the two women driving the S-types in my household....then it will continue to run and increase the heat until it does itself in. On the other hand, a Ford engine, (again, speaking in generalities) will shut itself down before the temp exceeds a point where extreme damage occurs. I "believe" the 3.0L has enough Ford heritage to not be "Jihadi-overheater" but again, haven't studied the control systems in each...at this point only a belief - but blessed daughter has arrived home a couple of times in a cloud of steam with that sickening burnt-glycol smell and her 3.0L is still a stellar performer - 19-20 mpg in town and 30+ on the highway.

Depends on what you want the car for I suppose. Laurie wanted one because of the body style and cause it's a Jag. I found this one and it just happened to be a 3.0 but otherwise loaded. Just as well since she has a lead foot.

I find the performance fine for a luxury sedan. Couple passing situations it picked up and went with no problem. I have other performace cars if I get the urge to waste rear tires.

Good luck with the search.

BTW, I also would be much interested to hear of all the problems with the V6s??

John,

I have a 2005 S-Type with the V6. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. It has pretty good gas mileage on the highway (30+mpg) and for most situations ample power. I have noticed that in Sport Mode it perks up nicely. I typically drive in Sport Mode around town and then above 50 mph or so switch to Normal, rather like using it as an Overdrive. One downside is that it is a little noisy above 3500 rpm. The upside though is that is when it comes up on the cams.

Your selection will be a lot wider if you consider V6s along with V8s since about 75% of S-Type are V6s. I'm not sure if there will be much difference in insurance costs.

I purchased my 00S-Type 3.0 a few years ago and it had 66,000 mi on it and today I have 91,000 mi on it in that time I replaced the tires, brakes, 1 ball joint, plugs & coils (all 6) when I got it, DCCV, A/C recharge and a vacuum hose and I forgot the cabin air filter. Prior to my acquiring the car it sat in a parking lot for a year. I get from 24mpg to 28mpg on the highway. I do not know what today will bring but for now it has been just fine for now.
