Default Genuine Jaguar oil filter -- what's the difference?

Hello,

I am doing some maintenance on my 2006 S-Type. Definitely going with genuine Jaguar filter. One well known U.S. vendor has XR858593 for $19; another well known U.S. vendor has XR823395 for $10. Both are listed as being for the S-Type 3.0 V6. What's the difference between these two filters?

Thanks!

As a side note, I prefer Mann filters on most of my cars, but I just want to get this over with and order all the stuff I need.

I have always used XR823395 for the V6-engined S-Types. Many of the Jaguar filters are manufactured by Mann.

Tony,

Your Jaguar 3.0L V6 is essentially the Ford Duratec (which was primarily designed by Porsche, with head design assistance by Cosworth!). Since Jaguar has never made its own oil filters, it's typically a waste of money to buy "Jaguar" filters when the identical filters are available from the OEM. Since your engine is essentially a Ford, and Ford owned Jaguar at the time your S-Type was manufactured, it is highly likely that the Jaguar-branded filters for your engine are made by a Ford supplier such as Motorcraft, Visteon, etc. So the Motorcraft FL400S that Jimmy recommended is very likely the same filter Jaguar puts its name on. And at Rock Auto, it's just $3.36, not because it's a bad filter, but because it fits lots of vehicles by Ford, Mercury, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Jaguar, so they can sell a lot of them, lowering the per-unit cost.

As NBCat mentioned, over the years Mann has made OE filters for many Jaguar models, and other filter OEMs include Mahle, Bosch, Valeo, Visteon and Filtrauto.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks all for the replies. I was really just curious about the difference between those two part numbers -- such as if one of them supersedes the other and why -- larger capacity? anti-drain valve? some design change that affects the flow? etc...

Done and ordered, thanks to all, especially NBCat.

If anyone knows the answer to above, it would be great to know. Also, if anyone is certain of the correct Mann part number, with knowledge as to whether it is supposed to have an anti-drain valve or any other physical characteristics specified/required, it would be great to know for next time. I generally don't trust cross-reference lists as they have been wrong with numerous cars I've owned.

Cheers,

Tony K.

Original Jaguar filters are designed to work reliably in space and under water, so you should only buy OEM filters.

Thanks, but I only trust my Lotus Esprit under water, not going to risk the Jag.

According to Rock Auto, the correct Mann filter is W71936 ($7.53). The specs indicate that it has a silicone anti-drain valve and may or may not have a Teflon-coated bypass valve (that feature depends on the application and whether it applies to your engine is not stated).

According to the Mann online catalog, filter W 719/36 does have both a bypass valve and an anti-drain back valve:

I usually use white Purolator filter for all cars. I use yellow one (better one) for engines after some repairs.
