Default Is this a good deal?

2001 Jaguar S-Type Base

I've been looking for an S-Type for a little while. I saw this ad on the local CL today. I think I could probably install an engine myself, but how much is a decent used engine going to cost me, and how much time are we talking about to install it? I have access to all of the tools I'd need.

I wonder why it needs a new engine. Not sure if its a good deal or not. Guess it depends on how much a running engine would costs. If you take it on and need a hand Ill help out.

It's a crap shoot Revrend. $2000 for the car. $2500 for a used engine and you hope the engine is good. Then lots of time to swap engines. You'll have $5000 in it before it's over plus all your labor.

Kelly Blue Book Trade In Value for the car is $2775 in GOOD condition. That's about what I'd try to buy the car for if I were buying it for myself and that would be with a running engine!!

The key here would be to find a dirt cheap engine that you know is good and then drive the car for 5-10 years to get your money back out of it. Otherwise I'd pass on the deal. It's just not that attractive. Keep in mind the car has 141,000 miles on it so there will be other things that need to be repaired as you go along. Sounds like a money pit to me...........

Reverend, Vance580 and Easyrider are spot on. The final cost and labor are usually more than anticipated. When all is said and done you'll look around and find deals with both running engines and way less mileage.

Thanks. The price of the engine was mostly what I was wondering. If I could talk the guy down to $1000-$1500 and buy an engine for $1500 I might be tempted to do it, but $2500 for an engine puts in in a range where I don't want to bother.

I never thought to look on eBay. They have numerous S-type engines in the $1000 range. Some with warranties and everything.

If you could get the car for $1500 and an engine for $1000 then you might be able to do the job and come out OK.

But I have to tell you, this is NOT a car that is cheap to work on or buy parts for. Having a car with 141,000 miles on it and a used motor in it basically makes it fairly worthless in the used car market so unless you plan to drive this thing until it drops you better pass on the deal. You'll never be able to do this and sell for a profit................

I think even though the market is down on them right now it still is a sweet deal. YOU will have alot of car for the money when finished, who cares about reselling it...the average person doesn't trade cars yearly.

He's asking $1999 for the car....

I'd go down there with 12-1300.

Here's what I'd do. Try to diagnose the motor. If it's toast. Part it out. You'll make 2-3k easily, especially if the interior is in good shape. If you have the space and patience to do it....

If you do, I call dibs on the little parking lamp lenses on the corners of the bumper.

This isn't a car worth dropping a motor into with associated labor. I can get you a turnkey 01 with way less miles for sub $4k from the auction.

Take care,

George

the interior by itself is worth 1500. I say buy it and part it out. But then you have to store it somewhere and then sell the parts off.

How did they know the tranny shifts excellent if it needs a motor? things that make me go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
