Spinall lives relatively close to me, and he has a long-block with a noise that he bought to pull the S/C off of.
So I need to decide if I want to buy a long block on the cheap that I KNOW I need to open-up and freshen-up, or if I want to gamble with a complete motor that I'd transplant without crackin' 'er.

I think we need to back up a bit and look at facts?
It is VERY rare for any STR to blow up an engine. I have read this whole thread and still don't know what happened to this engine?
Our old friend Twotee's lost his because of a massive coolant leak after installing his ported SC. The engine quickly over heated and locked up the motor before he could shut it down. This was due to an error during reassembly.
You won’t have anything to worry about when going to the track. Just do all the normal stuff like checking all fluids and keeping the car repaired so you are not driving around with permanent check engine light on.

i'm with you scrumpot, but mcjaguar makes good sense with the majority of str's. These cars are often put in the hands of maniacs the likes of "me"...driven hard. I too, purchased 2nd hand with 85k on the clock. She was abused, repossed, abused again. Lucky for her, i came along to take care of her. Though there's now 140k on the clock, periodical throgging is necessary to blow out carbon residuals...if you know what i mean?

!! I'm not sure I've SEEN a salvage motor with a one-year warranty? where do you find those?
None. Zero. Zip. Nada.
Until I get it apart, I won't know for certain. But my suspicion is wrist-pin failure, causing the rod to exit the block. This is just based on the noises, which were most certainly top-end to begin with.
And while nobody has suggested as much, I will immediately defend my maintenance and care: I changed the oil less than 1000 miles previous, with Mobil1. I am VERY meticulous in the way I care for my vehicles, because I'm an enthusiast... not a transportation-only driver.
But the fact that I only knew this car for 1500 of its 125,000 miles means whatever failure it endured, it was most assuredly on its way before I took ownership.

I thought a quick update might be in order?
I've got the motor out, and the new one on its' way back in. (Well... I'm almost ashamed to say it... I'm having a PRO do it, instead of doping it myself.... funny how the older I get the less I like doing this stuff myself)
Here's what we found upon removal:
Right-side of the block:
LEft side of the block
yeah.... it wasn't gonna run anymore.
anyhoo......
Looking forward to having it back up & running.
on that note: I need to find a replacement "Belly Pan" or whatever it's called that goes across the front of the undercarriage, and attaches to the front bumper and the fender-liners.
what's that called, and does anyone have a car they're parting-out that might have one?

Maybe now is the time to install the supercharger pulley while engine is still out... Hmm?
between your now two engines, do you happen to have a spare LH - DRIVERSIDE coil pack cover (the thing that reads jaguar and sits on top of the cam cover) ...

They got the used motor into the car, only to find it was BAD. (Ran terribly, so they did a compression-check and it had two low-holes, both burned-valves.)
So OUT IT CAME, and in went ANOTHER one. this one with 71k miles on it. runs BEAUTIFULLY, and STRONG. More on that later.
Incidentally: now I have a garage full of "extra" motor parts, if anyone needs anything. Including a set of GOOD heads (not the ones with the burned-valves) injectors & rails, COP's, supercharger and intercoolers, etc etc etc.
if anyone needs anything, let me know. I'll try to get it all itemized-up this weekend. I'll list it in the classifieds section.
