Hagerty Insurance on my STR
Hey y'all:
so, I've been paying $177/mo to insure my '03 STR on my regular policy since buying it last fall.
Since it really is NOT my regular-use vehicle, I decided to see what adding it to my Hagerty Collector Policy would do for me.
Hagerty quoted me $225/YEAR..... which was fantastic.
but this morning, they rejected me on it. Apparently a combination of the following:
-1 speeding violation in the last 5 years on my MVR.
-car is newer than 2000-model
their reasoning is that my 2003 Jaguar has higher exposure because it's more likely I'll drive it than my '70's or '80's collector vehicles which are insured through them.
to me... "that don't make no sense."
So I'm venting, I guess.
I've had one single moving violation in the last 16 years, and that was last spring, doing 77 in a 65. And it's going to cost me $1900/yr.
yes: I'm chapped.

Andrew, Can I hit the "Thanks" button a couple more times?
I've just been accepted by American Collectors, who I contacted at your recommendation.
They're taking all 3 of my Collector cars. Two of them are slightly more than what I was paying at Hagerty, but offset by them accepting the STR, which now has a premium of $226/yr with a $250 deductible.
I was very honest with them about the usage of the car, which is important. If this car were a car which I use daily, they would likely have denied me. But because it joins the ranks of 2 other enthusiast / collector cars in my garage, and I was able to show them the regular-use vehicles for all drivers in my household, they agreed to underwrite it.
I WAS required to fill-out a supplemental form, explaining why the STR should be considered "Collectible".
Anyway: thanks again to Andrew for the great tip!

well, an '03-'04 production run of only 350 units seemed to convince them. another 750 from '05-'08 didn't hurt. Original sticker-price premium over the base-model was helpful.

Holy smoke! I had no idea that STR's were so rare. Found this info posted by member PHD12volt sometime in 2009:
For those of you who drive S-Type R,s the production figures are as follows:-
1999 - 2001 3 were produced
2002 - 520 were produced
2003 - 205 were produced
2004 - 107 were produced
2005 - 163 were produced
2006 - 147 were produced
2007 - 129 were produced
Apparently, this was worldwide production. They really are limited editions!

two things
1. my insurance is like 112$ a month but im younger
2. Come to think of it I have only seen about 2 or 3 STR's besides mine on the road since they came out. I would have noticed especially in the last few years. Last 3 years ive seen 1 ! (notincluding my own)
I see lots of s types but the R IS A RARE ONE , it really is
