Hey all,
The wood grain looking shifter knob on my 2005 S-Type auto trans has some fine line cracks in it and I want to remove it and keep it out of the heat and sun here in the south to avoid further cracking. Store it away in the house to protect it. I already put on a nice dash cover and steering wheel cover to protect those.
Does this just screw off and what are the metric threads when looking for something else to put on?
Thanks all for the help !!
Does the knob have wrench flats on the metal portion at the base of the knob? If like my '02, that is a.separate jam nut. You have to first turn it down, away from the knob body, and then both pieces can unthread.
What if some chucklehead thought it was all one piece and try to unthread it with a wrench on the jam nut? Well, it would lead to nothing but frustration as the jam nut gets tighter. I do not care to discuss how I know this.
Well, the knob just unscrews with some hand gripping and that leaves the chromed metal tapered piece. No flats or nut, just smooth and tapered. There are two dimples on the top that require some special wrench, so I used my snap ring pliers and it came loose pretty easily.
Now, to find a replacement.
Oh, and the threads are M8x1.25mm.
No, that is a machined dimple and there is another one on the opposite side. Probably for another special wrench for another adjustment once the wooden knob is on covering the top dimples.
Ok, got a nice leather replacement. Fairly heavy being aluminum with padding and leather wrapped. Came with several inserts and the 8mm (5/16") insert fit perfect. Set screws hold the insert in and push against the main shaft to lock it in tight. Bottom ring hides it all.
Very comfy to rest my hand on while driving.
I like it !
There's a fancier replacement on EBay....one that has the Jaguar logo on the top, and it's the same wood-like material. Not cheap, though. Screw-on like original.
This was only $15 at the local auto parts store.
And I'm good with it. Just wanted an inexpensive alternative.
Perfect height for my hand while my arm rests on the center console.
