I have been reading the FSM workshop manual last hour so.. timing chains two them , kind like the infinity j30 , never done a cylinder head removal/install looking forward to that .. difference on this t-chain job its the install on the L/R camshafts both exhaust /intake have to set to certain positions before putting on the chains and also the cams bolts have to removed on sequence too.. I will do the search on the tools too incase I'm missing any .. seen 4 or 5 from the FSM

Jaimster,

As you are going through a divorce this may not be the best time for you to strip the heads of yourself. I know from personal experience that it is difficult to concentrate on things.

I would let the workshop do the job with you helping as the price is very good.

Then you can have the fun of driving one of the most beautiful cars in the world (not that I am biased) and get the jaguar smile.

All the best and look after yourself.

you might be right Ducmon ! I was kind of excited yesterday however .. ho NOT looking at bringing more stress into my life .. I can always compensate the expense by selling a service dodge van ram1500 I have was gonna use it for a small business idea I had . before the divorce so much for that ! I'm gonna contact the guy again .. ask him what he needs as far as parts . I know he told me 900 for everything , want to make sure job its done right !
looked at the head gasket kit on rockauto yesterday for about 180 and them I know I will need the set of new bolts for the heads right! that's another 40 not bad so far.

appreciate the advise! one thing keeping my sanity work out everyday and some learning stages of meditation.

If America is anything here in Germany, a workshop gets up to 60% discount on the price that a private person pays. I have joined a auto club where we all work on our cars together. This how I can afford my diva because I get this discount on parts that I don't have to get from jaguar directly.

I reckon that how this workshop can do the job for a good price as it looks that he is not charging you the full price that you would have to pay.

Just make sure the guy is competent and understands what he is doing. He will need the special tools to set the timing.

If you go to the stickies you will find this post. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...%2A%2A-124677/.

It does not look like you can buy the timing chains on their own and they are over 4 hundred dollars.

what is the milage of your car because you may not need to change them.

These cars are not the cheapest to keep running so work out what you need to repair/replace.

You will need the crankshaft locking (positioning) tool to be used for locking the crank in the timing position not for locking it while removing the damper and the camshaft locking (positioning) tool.

If you need to replace the cam chains they are a lot cheaper in Britain.

I'm just going to get all the instructions from the s type " FSM workshop " . I found lots of instructions there which I will be printing out .. do you guys think that might be enough info to get it done ?

Ducmon yes I did dowmload both parts . still not able to install them yet.. I went ahead started the tear down using FSM
so far this what I have done :

drain all coolant and engine oil -- looks like COFFE MIL SHAKE OH YEA! BAD !
removed all front coolant system components.
removed alternator , power steering , compressor to remove oil pan .. loosen oil pan
removed crankshaft damper
front engine cover
removed timing chains and other components followed procedure on FSM manual
removed all intake/exhaust cams followed instructions
loosen cylinder bolts according to instructions -- did notice passenger side two back bolts were loose NOT tight at all .. probably where coolant its leaking through CYLINDER GASKET ????
FORGOT TO LOOSEN exhaust manifold planning on doing that tomorrow .
so I can pull the heads

hours of work so far around 12 , I'm paying a helper a kid eager to learn 11 bucks per hour . the other experience guy was just gonna help me on the cylinders removal and install I decided its best to work with somebody through out the whole project hopefully I wont spend more than 300 or so on the helper ..
work involved NOT too bad HARDEST PART its the weather ! freaking cold 30 degrees car in garage still have to have door open ..just time consuming on removing parts and labeling connections ..only special tool used so far crankshaft pulley remover..

well keep at it tomorrow ..
