My car is giving code P1383 and P1388. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix my 2001 JaguarS-type 3.0 other then replacing the engine. The dealer recommended I replace the engine, but I do not understand that, because the car runs fine and I always had the service performed. I have already had the computer reflashed which kept the like off long enough for me to leave the dealer. So any help will be greatly appricated

VVT over retarded bank 1 and bank 2.
At least one of those is a known issue and can be sorted with a software fix. I had one of them come up when I had my car a couple of times. I just reset the code, first by disconnecting the battery and later when it came up again a year or so later I bought a reader and reset it onceI knew what it was. By then I was aware it was a software issue as it is listed in a TSB. I do not have access to it as I'm at work and the site where the link is stored is down just now. It's one of those that is only done if the customer complains! Think there may be another list of TSB's and links to them on this site somewhere.
If your dealer is suggesting replacing the engine, find another dealer. The issue is to do with the VVT and most probably electrical. Your problem is probably not the software one mentioned in the TSB as from memory it only throws one code, not the two.
Edit - Founda link on this site to the TSB's and I was wrong, it covers both codes!

Have a nice Christmas day reading it, I better go and do some work.
