Just vainly trying to clarify that the type of tappet/lifter that might somehow contribute to the OP's problem were not used on this engine. More to do with the engine being OHC rather than OHV design.

Nothing more, OK?

Ok guys, Firstly I am an american. I now live in england. I have been working on cars since I was about 10. Along time ago.

The 2 main cam chains, (out of 4) are fine with no play. I checked this by removing the oil cap and breather pipe. you can physically 2 of the 4 chains. I am sure that after the oil change happens it will either cure it or point me into a more definate direction. I will keep you guys posted.

Please I can understand your terminology bonnet, hood, boot, trunk etc.. I get it all... I also understand that there is other things that in america, canada etc will all use that are differant in terms.

I honestly dont feel its a major worry... I took it up to (above the speed limit) for a long run and checked and rechecked everything.

The head is not gone, its not even showing signs of problems,

The noise goes away after one or two quick revs after first starting.. ie the oil has dropped.

I agree to get something that might be better and long lasting and will hold. possibly magnetic oil or something like that. anyway I will let you all know soon enough... I am focusing on my bike atm for the up comming motorcycle rallys. the car is hardly used because its just not needed... and apart from it sitting for a long period, its perfect. I have fixed nearly everything wrong with her now.... and this is just a annoying bit left... it might be a blocked pipe or lack of oil.. these are my thoughts.. and YES I will be buying a proper jaguar filter.. if the weight of the oil for the engine doesnt matter too much I am going for a 10/40 weight.. usually good with older cars. Anyway thank you all again. Jon

Just for reference, 10W40 is not on the list of recommended viscosities for your engine. I see no benefit in second guessing an OEM.

To put something to bed (hopefully), I have never heard of an OHC bucket and shim being called either a tappet or a lifter. Not just on a Jag, but on any vehicle. This has nothing to do with US, Canada or the UK. If Jag uses the terminology interchangeably, it's no surprise that this might cause confusion.

Just an FYI I use 10w-30w in both my cars and on page 6-8 of the Maintenance manual for my 2000 S-Type it has a chart that indicates for an area of 60°F to 120°F that 10w-30w & 10w-40w are acceptable along with typical 0w-40w. Just an FYI

Thanks Gus. I was looking at a later year manual. Not sure if the OP could count on his temps always being above 60*F though.

Mikey your right, its normal temp here in the uk is about average if 10c and the lowest is about -5 in reality. the high is about 22

so in Fahrenheit

average is 50

lowest 23

highest 74

Thats why I suggested 10/40 so far the Jaguar dealership hasnt argued with this decision.

surprised 5 - 30 wow... ok... well I will do more research into that... I found that the jag does not have a proper filter... its some after market one. now I drove the car (honestly a total of 2k) at the most if that to be honest... and I have had the car for over a year now. I just dont need a car but I do...

anyway I am looking into this oil and which one will suite best... but you guys on here have been AWESOME for advice... and I cant thank you enough.. one problem after another gets cleared.... and sorted.. and for this I thank you all.

on a seperate note... Does anyone know what clue/adhesive to use for the bottom of the front window?? my rubber has come off in one corner about 14 inches... so I want to sort that out asap... I know its nothing major but I do want to fix it. Thanks.

PS I owe alot of people on here some serious beer!

The filters are an OK price at a dealer. Not cheap, but OK. I don't buy oil there, though!

I think the oil spec is in the handbook (free download from jag site) but if not it'll be in JTIS or the like.

I have a trade account with a company..... so I can get oil at a reduced price.. I cant believe it holds 12 ltrs of oil! holy cow.

Semi or fully? thats the question.

I am thinking semi synthetic only because thats what would have been used.

I use Synthetic (Mobil 1) in my cars and in my 2000 S-Type if I recall correctly around 6 to 7qts with filter and I think that equals 6 to 6.6 liters. Check the fluid level as you go along is the best advice I can offer.

As others have said, 12L makes no sense. Jaguar filled your engine (and all S-types) with regular dino oil. No requirement to use semi or full synthetic.

Use it if it makes you feel better.

My 2003 S Type is also experiencing the same issue. Did you ever find the cause and solution?

Which of the things? If a sound, post an audio somewhere.

The OP has not been active on the forum since March 2015; a response from him is unlikely.

A fresh thread (hopefully with an audio clip) would be the best way to go.
