Default Help - Replacing Water Pump on 2000 S-Type 4.0

I am replacing a faulty water pump on a 2000 S-Type 4.0. JTIS says to install a new O-Ring and Gasket with the new pump. The new OES water pump came with a thin metal gasket, but no o-ring, so I ordered the appropriate o-ring. Now the pump has arrived and although it is OES, complete with a Jaguar sticker on the box, the male end of the water pump is different. The old one was plastic with a groove for the o-ring. The new one is aluminum with no groove. In all other respects it is an exact match. I put the gasket on and slipped the o-ring over the male end and installed the pump to torgue spec and could see between the block and the pump. Clearly the o-ring is preventing proper installation. The new gasket is a thin metal gasket of a different design than the old one. it has a raised portion around each of the two water passages and one around the male end of the water pump. Based on this difference it would appear that the new gasket is ment to replace the gasket and o-ring combination, but I don't want to deviate from JTIS unless I can confirm this. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

In looking this over a second time, it is possible that the o-ring should be installed in the block first and then the water pump would seal up against it. The only problem with that theory is that the new water pump has three (3) slots equally spaced around the male end to hold tabs on the gasket that hold the gasket straight while installing. I'm not sure if the o-ring would seal up against these slots. There is always the posibility that the parts supply sent the wrong pump, but it is perfect in all respects except for the o-ring issue. (The JTIS diagrams are not helpful.)

I sincerely hope someone has some experience with this install. The car is incapacitated in my garage at the moment and will stay that way unless I sort this out.

Found the answer. My first search didn't locate the it but more diligent searching revealed that the new water pumps have an upgrade over those originally installed in the 2000 model. New OES pumps are designed to use only the thin metal gasket, no o-ring as before.

Thanks for taking a look. I would pull down the post if possible to avoid anyone wasting their time, but it doesn't appear possible. Hopefully this will help someone else with the same problem.

Did you use any type of sealant on the metal gasket? Just curious... Thanks - and no worries - this issue has ben bogging me for almost a week on the O-Ring debacle. Thanks for posting your findings... Please let me know if you experienced any leak issues with the new water pump/metal gasket...

It's been a couple of years since I did the job. It's still working great, no leaks. I honestly can't remember if I used any sealant on the gasket. I do keep some black gasket sealant in the shop and I may well have put some on as insurance. I can't imagine that it would hurt anything to do so.

Correct. No o-ring, just the metal crush gasket.

Got it! Thanks - going to take your advice above (as I have always done with gaskets) and use some gasket sealant as insurance - Thanks so much!

On the tension pulley there is a 3/8 drive square. Put in a 3/8 long bar from your tool set. Once you move the pulley, the loose belt comes right off the water pump. I use a 22inch 1/2 inch bar with a reducer to 3/8. There is a tutorial in the how to notes.
