Default Help!!! Slip in drive

Hey guys,

Well I am back again and I have yet another problem with the Jag. When in drive and stepping down on the gas the transmission slips but than if I back it off and gently push the pedal it will switch to next gear. Also if i use manuel 2,3, and 4 and shift myself. There is no problem at all,it switches just fine. Problem only in drive. I also got the gearbox fault light but it goes on and off when it wants to. I am so confused and have been reading alot of forums stating if you take it to Jag they will tell you to replace and 9 times out of 10 they still have same problem but are now 3000 in debt. Any help guys please let me know

Thanks, Chadd Martin

Chad,

My S Type expertise is limited at the moment, but growing daily.

Being an '02 I am assuming an X202 with the 6 speed ZF transmission??. At that mileage I would strongly suggest a trans fluid drop and refill. This has been a serious advice down here from ALL manufacturers using that transmission, to be dropped and refilled at about 80K kms (50K miles).

If your car is the X200 5 speed Ford Europe transmission, then a fluid drop and refill is overdue.

Both these transmissions are these silly "sealed for life" units, that is proving to be a very costly item if the fluid is not changed at a regular interval, albeit at a greater distance than the older style units with dipsticks.

Our S has the 5 speed, and I have dropped and refilled the trans fluid 6+ times since purchase 12 months ago, and it was real grubby at the first drop (120000kms), and now the shifts are sweet and smooth, up and down. The fluid is now almost the same colour coming out as what is going in, so happy all round.

Of course there may be some other gremlin involved here, but fresh fluid in any automatic transmission never really does any harm, and NO, Jaguar will want nothing to do with this fluid change, so do it yourself, or find a good reliable trans shop to do it for you.

+1 to grant, also bare in mind a failing battery can cause gearbox issues as well as engine faults (like a misfire) the age of your car you should have the Ford 5 speed unit, any transmission shop should be able to do a fluid change as it's a common unit.

+ 2 to Grant and Police666 - I believe you have the 5R55N trans - again, pan drop, filter and change of fluid is due...

Awesome guys. Thanks alot.I am almost positive it has never had a transmission flush. When I called Jaguar the guy told me, "Its lifetime, you dont need it." I than thought ok, thats not what i'm hearing. Probably because they want me to blow the trans so I have to come in for a new on, sad. The battery is brand new and I do have small drain from ignition barrel that is bad. Going in shop end of week for new barrel and keys.

O to add another detail. Jaguar told me that they stay away from doing Transmission flush because alot of times it breaks at bottom where there's plastic screws of some sort and than i'll have to replace the whole unit. Thats whats made me not question first time I asked. Thanks again guys

At 2002 (in USA) it really has to be the 5R55N so there could be a PCM reflash but there cannot be an autobox reflash as it hasn't got a computer in it. Cheap fluid and a very common box - but if you go anywhere make it a trans shop as they will know the box whereas Jaguar places frankly don't (most places).

This sounds like a classic transmission fluid issue. There was a wheeler dealer episode recently where they did a service on a '00 Porsche Boxster S (ZF 5SP? tranny) that had the same symptoms:

Take a watch and get your fluid changed from a place that knows what they are doing; the process is pretty much the same as they describe in the TV episode. It's relatively cheap and it's where I'd start given the symptoms.
