Help Sourcing a Re-Man Torque Convertor For My STR

When a converter starts going bad the debris does enter all cooling lines, radiator and trans lines. Sure filter stops some particles but not the smaller stuff or the trashed fluid. 90% of all converters sol thru shops are remanufactured. Flushing lines may help, but on this tranny very doubtful. In Arizona, talk to John's Jags or Terry Larson (premier Jaguar expert).

clubairth1, I very much appreciate you finding this note. I actually found the TSB as well on a previous thread where I believe you might have posted it, but failed to read that key point. Interesting, and more results to come as I work through this.

Now the updated seal was new to me and I wanted to learn exactly what is failing in the TC.
We have had people drive quite a while with this problem. But it does not seem to cause other problems because they swap the converter out and it's all fixed.
Still sounds like there should be something coming off the lining as it fails?

Quick update before I write a detailed response pending below.
They got everything patched up with the reman TC, new fluid & filter, and I got the car over the weekend (have 110 miles on it). It is currently in "Adaptation Stage" where I have to drive it like a grandma for 150 miles while the TCM adapts as they performed the reflash. Therefore I have been driving extremely slow and haven't taken it over 2000 rpm, however, ughhh, I noticed a rumbling coming from the tranny (I think) in the overdrive gears under load, under 2000rpm. Sounds just like this thread:

I e-mailed the shop to document what I am experiencing, but am wondering if this is the TC getting broken in while the TCM adapts to having a working TC? Not sure, not excited about this new development though. However, the lurch is gone so I got that going for me.

Wrong meaning of the code.
Look it up in JTIS - free download - and save yourself pain.
All P1 codes are non-generic so it's vital to look them up for the make, model, engine, year, etc.
I would NOT go back to any shop that fails to do the above, it's not like OBD is recent. The above applies to EVERY car over the last 20 years or so.

I know that perhaps it doesn't help you guys vry much, but Mackies Transmissions remanufacture torque converters.
They do this for lots of dealers, prvate sales etc and ship them all over the place.
I was there the beginning of this week and they serviced my transmission for me, while there I was given a factory tour.
There were around 3 or maybe 4 dozen torque converters lying around in various stages of remanufacture. It was cool to see them being cut open, prised apart and to see the internals......really quite complex
They're also a UK ZF (GB) A rated supplier so they stand behind their work.
I have organised a meet event & factory tour of the facility for members for the 29th March, should be informative and a good day out.

That rumble strip noise is why I'm looking for a new torque converter in the first place - my understanding is that the rumble noise is a tell-tale sign of the failing torque converter.
I'm getting it when the fluid is cold - so first thing when I start the car up, and as it wants to change gears at around 40-60 km/h.
I also have an RPM jump when it's happening, keep an eye out for that.
If that is the case, there is a TSB on it, and apparently reflashing the jaguar firmware to a later release can help (but I have not done so yet with mine).
Any luck with the garage?

Apologies for not responding sooner. I am trying to put miles on my car before officially replying.
The rumbling noise was attributed to the prop shaft after I took it to Jag north Scottsdale. They said it was leaking and needed to be replaced. After about 500 or so miles all is well again and this fixed the issue and the new torque converter is working just fine.

At that point in the process I was just happy that the dealership identified the problem quickly as well as provided a solution that did not include a new transmission. Again, so far the car drives better than it ever did, especially since the TC was most likely bad since I bought the car or 15k miles ago.

Can't be the transmission, the 6hp26 has an output flange and the driveshaft bolts up to it.
Don't have the service manual in front of me, but the XK has a two piece driveshaft with a bearing in the middle. Maybe the S-type is similar and what they meant was that the bearing was leaking. All speculation of course, but a bearing seems consistent with a rumble sort of noise.
Glad your problem is sorted out. I've got the same lock/unlock problem which will no doubt turn into a permanent fault at some point.
Picked up a whole transmission with TQ converter out of a 2004 XKR so I can rebuild it on my own time and have a good replacement ready. Figure I can go through the valve body too and maybe upgrade to the Exedy clutches... I think I might have a problem.

I think you are asking me? I am wondering if my TCC is malfunctioning, it is hard to find good info on the internet about symptoms. My post in the XK8/XKR forum explains my symptoms. While my car is a 2004 and should not be within the range of the known bad Torque Converter Clutch linings, it doesn't mean I couldn't have a problem with the TCC anyhow...
