Default HELP! stuck in the middle of nowhere!

Our 2000 S-Type just got a warning: Transmission Fault, I looked it up and it said pull over as soon as it's safe (we were on a huge turnpike). Before we could pull over, it switched to "Transmission Overheated" and back to the first one. We pulled over and got roadside assistance, and now we're waiting for the diagnoses. Could it possibly be something simple? We have 1k miles to go.

Could be anything. Even low trans oil. If you're lucky there will be codes to provide clues.

Thanks. The tow truck Guy said he didn't see any fluid leaking, good sign? I'm going through the manual. Can't find the fluid!

Is it a closed system? Manual says it's 'good' for 175 - 250k miles !!! I had a car once that had this system- is it the same?

NO CODES!?! How could there be no codes? They drained the trans fluid (full, but had some buildup- maybe metal shards?) They are going to recommend rebuilding trans.

If it's an auto it's the Ford 5R55N and many competent trans shops know them. Why should there be codes? It's a bonus if there are.

Beware that the fluid must be checked in a specific manner. Plenty do it wrong but any good trans shop will know how.

We're done, then. I just don't have a clue as what to do with the Jag. We have to return, we'll get a rental, but we can't afford trans work. This car had it's trans rebuilt once before we bought it, about 5 years ago. It was on the CarFax.

How much did they quote you to rebuild the trans?

Haven't even located the part(s). When I mentioned it was the Ford part listed above, he said that it wasn't. We are in the middle of no where, seriously. He has us by the short and curlies.

Time to have it taken somewhere else I think.

We're getting a second opinion, all. We're off of a turnpike by Ft. Pierce FLA (USA)

Pp.s. the mechanic mentioned that the trans hadn't been rebuilt or replaced; CarFax must have lied.

Well, I am going to be of no help, sorry.

But the so called mechanic is sadly mistaken if he says the transmission is not a Ford 5R55N. Fort Pierce looks to be a nice size city. There has got to be a transmission service place there somewhere. Bummer more money for towing, but I would get it out of where the vehicle is now.

Sucks to be on the "short and curlys"

JJ, everyone who replies is helpful. I feel very helpless right now and it dosn't feel good at all. Any post is welcome. We have it at another place now, and we're waiting on their dx and quote. I should have taken a friend's advice and taken a rental in the first place and left the Jag at home. We had to pay out-of-pocket for the towing, my car was totaled last week in a car crash, so my AAA Gold was cancelled right along with my insurance. Spouse only carries basic card.

No offense to the folks of Ft Pierce, lol. It seems like a nice place- but we're not from here, so to us, it could as well be Mars (with internet, thankfully)
