Get it in writing from the mechanic and get the towing company to pay for the damages. Might be tough since you're in a "foreign" area, but go for it.
Good luck

Don't part with any money.

The garages are simply there to rip people-off. The first rebuild probably never took place - how would you ever know?

I don't deal with garages full-stop, not even official jaguar who were thieves, in my opinion - they can use their lawyers.

Couldn't run a bath.

There are lots of threads on here dealing with the 5R55N.

I'm currently diagnosing my own gearbox. It could be a very simple valve or spring.

Has he suggested a fix?
I can see a can of worms developing.
It looks like you could go to the beach, but I suppose that's not on the list?

Leonard- I'm with you on that! We've put out a call to our distant family on this, and one of them told us about this garage. Spouse half jokingly said they were the 'wrong-ish' side at one point, having a garage like the first one loong ago... licensce to steal. Can Karma switch family trees?

I'd move to a competent shop that knows the 5R55N. It's common to Fords as well as 10yr old jags. I find it hard to believe a tow guy over there would not know how to tow an automatic car.

This has to be one of my greatest fears, being in a "foreign" city and not knowing anyone (mechanic-garage) that will give you a honest and accurate answer.
Even the garages I have known for 25+ years will still try and cover up there "mistakes" as they do not want to be "looked down upon" by there friends!!

I wish you Good Luck and keep us posted.

You could always send the car home on a transport, rent a car and finish your trip, or a U-Haul truck and trailer one way but that would only add to the missery !!

I feel for you. I was in a similar but not as bad situation several years ago near a resort area. I swore could hear banjo music coming from the manager's office.

UPDATE: this guy knows what he's doing, but it will take until Monday to get the part. What is this thing about transporting? Our son has special needs, we could use an alternative way to get home

Paarts - (transmission parts) : bands, pump regulator, cellenoid, internal distribution chain. The trans burned up inside (?). Also, tie rod broken from towing. Disclaimer- these are from Spouse's notes

That sounds like the going rate.
I think mine was about that much a little less because I did not have a inner tie rod replaced.
Good Luck

We're going ahead, as we wouldn't have gotten anyone to do that for that price at home. I've had several quotes between 5 and 8k. And this is with me reminding them it's a Ford trans. We're hoping it's ready today. It was supposed to be ready yesterday, but when they test drove it, it felt wonky in 3rd. They already have an idea what it is, so hopefully we can get back on the road today.

I am sorry but I read these long expensive threads and keep saying the same thing. It's a common Ford automatic transmission!!! This transmission was installed on several million Fords and is very well known. It can be built to withstand 1000 HP+. All the problems have been found and fixed a long time ago.

Here is a complete rebuilt unit with warranty and TQ for $1800!!!

5R55N - 5R55S - 5R55W Transmissions - Transmission Depot

Plus it's in a small town in Florida to boot!
