Help with temperature sensor, please
I just replaced the radiator hose (JLM21497 from the dealer) on my '06 s-type 3.0. However, the female connector from the wiring harness will not fit on the male plug on the new sensor that came on the cross pipe assembly. The male plug is nearly identical to the old one, but one of the raised bars is not in the same location, thereby not allowing it to mate to the connector. The sensor on the new part screws in, whereas the sensor on the old part snapped in. Therefore, I can't use the old sensor in the new cross pipe.
Does anyone know what one is supposed to do in this situation? Should I just go ahead and trim the raised area off? Get a different sensor? Replace the female connector?

Not sure which dealer you obtained the part from, but "Joe"(Jose) at the parts counter at Autoban Jag-FtW is very good about dragging enough information out of me to make sure he gets the right part in my hand. Maybe give him a call Monday morning and tell him your VIN's last-6 and the part number of your new hose?
And if you can't get it sorted.....as long as you are in Dallas, you have the advantage of not being too far away from Motorcarman! As it's upper rad hose asy, I guess you won't be driving it, but he can surely sort it in short order if you can get it out to him.

This is completely crazy. Jaguar messed this up. I got the supposed correct part, which supersedes a previous one, but the sensor connector is wrong. I called three dealers and a local Jag mechanic and nobody has heard of this problem. I inquired about the part number stamped on the old sensor and they told me that it is for the v8 not the v6. But even if I got that one, it won't fit the new cross pipe because it snaps in place instead of screws in.
After sending a pic to the dealer they tried to tell me that somebody must've changed the wiring harness in my car. Sure, I said. Then he pulled the old part that they have one left of and it matched mine but its over $100 more and it includes the thermostat housing, which I don't need. And, I've already installed the new one, which was a major hassle to do.
So, I'm just going to shave off the raised area on the sensor's plug and see if it works. I mean, a sensor is a sensor, right? It's two wires. Same voltage and resistance, yes? I can't imagine that it wouldn't send the same info to the car's brain as the other one. Anyone disagree?

You may be successful and everything will work correctly, or the additional 100$US will seem small if there is another issue that is created...

Back in 2009, when I was replacing the upper rad hose on the 03 S-type, Joe said "There are two available, ~$125 and ~$225; I've got one of each in stock...."What's your last 6?" I read it off to him, then opined, "I guess that takes the $225 one?"

But you are correct, comes with a T-stat housing and a lot of stuff that seems unnecessary - as I surmise the little tank-turret nipple that goes to the overflow tank cap is what's leaking? A couple of years later, several parts-places offered a much cheaper version w/o t'stat, Rock Auto used to have them, don't see them on there now, however. IIRC, the aftermarket part sans T-stat and housing was in the $60-$80 range. I'd think they'd still be available from somewhere - but that version was never available from the dealer.

Just for reference for other owners, according to Jaguar, this is the correct part (JLM21497) for '03 to '08. However, it's fairly new as it supersedes an older one that's no longer made, so it seems that they made a mistake. Perhaps they will correct it or issue some kind of TSB. I think most 3.0s, especially earlier than 2007, must be different from mine or they would have heard of this problem already. Neither local dealer, nor a local independent, has run into it and they say they've sold plenty already. Of course, it's more likely that older cars would be needing this part.
So the question is, is the new ill-fitting sensor correct for the 3.0? When I had the dealer cross reference my old sensor they told me it was the one for the 4.2. So, either Jag made a mistake originally by installing the wrong sensors on some 3.0s or they put the wrong sensor on the new part. Or, maybe they all work just fine with either engine now.
Nonetheless, I decided to use the ol' dremel tool and shave the connector on the sensor to accommodate the plug. Well, it seems to work just fine. Temperature gauge works normally.

I'll have to have a look on the 05 next time I have the bonnet up. Squares with your postulate that the new hose fits the older cars.
