Ojay guys, I am about at my wits end with tryng to convert my foglights over to HIDs...

I originally ordered the kit with the H1 bulbs as thats what was currently in the car (2003 STR). This was a no go because you cant put the H1 bulb into the angled socket and then there is not way to lock it into place...

That said I went back and ordered the H11 bulb thinking this would allow me to lock the bulb directly into the foglight socket. Tried this last night and once again NO JOY! This time the socket lock is correct but the diameter is too small for the foglight housing so... You guessed it wont lock into the housing...

Anyone out there done this conversion and know what bulb needs to bu used to fit properly into the 2003 STR foglight socket???

Won't the light just bounce off the fog thus making things worse for you?

And blind oncoming drivers if there's no or only thin fog?

 

Sure it would if they were to be used as true fog lights... I want them more for driving lights. I do A LOT of night time driving and with the majority of that being interstate traffic cant use my high beams much. I am looking to put more light down the road to light my way home...

Could be possible to change the high beams into fogs and the fogs into driving lights... hummmm.... now you have me thinking... going to look for yellow bulbs for the high beams...

 

Shoot there's a member in Kentucky I believe that has the yellow high beam bulbs on an STR. There is a picture of it not so long ago, I just can't remember who at this second.

BTW it looks pretty cool.

 

Have you checked with kensun.com for the HID fogs?

Just checked that site, no luck... Same exact issue, we need the H1 bulbs thats whats in there now, but you lose the bulb housing with the HIDs...

Really whats needed is a H1 bulb housing / bulb holder... Ideas???

I cant believe that Seth and I are the first to try and install HIDs for foglights... Has no one else done this on an STR - there has to be a way to make this work...

 

You might want to try a "precision" head light aim.

It is possible to do 70+ mph on low beams without over driving the lights if they are aimed just right.

Seth - Yellow bulbs just came in today! Plan on putting them in later tonight or tomorrow, will post pics once they are in. Should only take 15 minutes or so, but its a rainy day here and making me lazy... ;-)

New yellow HB3 bulbs installed into High Beams...

So I installed the new HB3 yellow (fog) bulbs into the High Beams as we had discussed over the past few days...

The look at night is good with a nice yellow beam, but not the desired effect during the day. The pictures Rick shared cleary show a yellow colored high beam in broad daylight.

I am now thinking in that photo the owner must have put a yellow film over the lens to create that much of a yellow effect. Anyway, the night time look is good and I think will serve the purpose to turn the highbeams into "fogs" and then convert the fogs into driving lights.

I also have given up on the HIDs and have decided to go with LEDs. I have ordered H1 26 SMD/LED bulbs for the fogs in 6000 Xenon white to better match my 8000K HID headlight. Also converted the T10 parking lights to LED. Whole front end will be brilliant white with the exception of the yellow high beam fogs!

Will post results when all bulbs are in, but here are the new high beams!

 

Chris, the yellowish high beams look cool. Where did you order the LED fogs and parking bulbs?

 

So here is my next idea... Anyone ever thought about installing "angel eyes" into the fog housing? I was thinking it would look cool to have the LED bulb then have an LED halo around the outside of the fog...

Basically was thinking to purchase a used fog or if someone has an old one (broken is fine) that they would be willing to donate to the cause for testing / proof of concepts.

I want to take the glass lens off of the outside and place an LED halo ring inside the housing and connect it back to the main bulb to give it that halo look. It looks like it could be done fairly easilly and the costs would be minimal to convert the fogs...

 

I now have my second XENTEC H1 6000K HID Slim Ballast HID Xenon Kit in my fogs. If you take the orange washer that's around the HID bulb, then the fitment is almost perfect. But I also sealed around it with clear, waterproof silicone, that can be later removed if the bulb needs to be changed. So after the silicone hardens, it keeps the bulbs in socket in place. This is a cheap kit, its only $33 so the bulbs last about a year and a half. I turn my fogs on every time it gets dark and really can tell difference with additional light output.

 

New Fogs arrived today these are the H1 HID Xenon White 25 SMD LED Bulbs.

I wil be installing these in the car over the weekend and will update with a few pics of the how the light looks to give you guys an idea of the distance / brghtness etc.

I am hopeful that this will give that nice white light look to match my Xenons and LED parking bulbs without having to cut the factory wires and modify the fogs in any way. I have a really nice Xenon conversion kit with 3 sets of HID bulbs (H1,H11 and H7) complete with ballasts if anyone is interested...

Also installing new LED DRL's too. I have an 03 STR and there a small vents under the fogs in the bumper. I will be fitting the new LED bar DRLs into that opening just to add a little flair!

Actually I didn't even use yellow bulbs, it is Lamin-x film that I just put onto the highbeams. I used the ones I had on my hella 500 lights, but as those lights were flat, and the Jag's are concave, it causes a bit of bunching of the plastic.

Okay so here is the promised update...

I REALLY like the look of the new LED bar DRLs, they look great and really modernize the front end...

Seth - I have hit another road block with the LED Fogs... The bulbs are too big for the opening in the Fog so you cant get them to go in... Unfortunately I think I am going to have to break down and pull the fogs out and take a dremel tool to the opening so that the bulb will fit into the housing... Once I get some spare time I will do this and send you the steps...

Other than that the project went really well took about 45 minutes to mount and wire the new DRLs and they look GREAT!!
