I too would love this in my S and have looked into it. Like you I could find no ready made solution, so I approached a local cabinet maker. You could have knocked me down with a feather when he quoted nearly £2K for custom made picnic tables. Got the impression he wasn't really interested.
Let us know if you have better luck.

I think that back seat is in his XJ Super. You may be best served to look for an XJ with this option via salvage yards and see about transferring to your S rather than build from scratch.

hmmm thanks for that Chris,

I have all the wood working tools, bandsaw etc... but I dont think I could ever match the quality of Jaguar.

I might give it a go...and cut a template... is it walnut? (or more so walnut burl?)

failing that and with that ongoing.. I will keep my eyes out.

if anyone has one I could borrow... for a template that would be great!

I loved the little wood fold down trays on the old 60's MkII cars. Reminds me of the Grey Poupon TV ads.

A little off the subject but I am almost positive there were some S-Types with the folding rear seat trays.

Here are two pictures of what appears to be a "proto-type" Lincoln LS rear seat fold down trays. I always figured they were only made because someone at Ford got Jaguar envy!!

Not sure they would fit the S-Type and I still don't know where to get them or if they were ever sold??

I know the trays were available as an option on some of the Range Rover packages - Like the Holland and Holland and so forth- maybe you can find a tray off of a P38A Rangie and see if it could be modified to fit. I think they call them picnic trays or something like that. Not real common but I have seen them.

Those do appear to be burled walnut in the pics - I'd think you'd want to try to match whatever shade/type of wood you have in your S. That might be the tricky part.
