How far past 'E' can you go?

So has anyone with an S-type ever pulled a Kramer like on Seinfeld and driven their car all the way until you literally run out of gas?
And if so, how many kilometers/miles were you able to go after the low fuel indicator came on?
I'd like to know how far you can really go...
Thanks!

I can tell you Rob that when the "fuel pump fault" light comes on the MIL you do NOT have much more than a mile or so before she dies. No worries about the fault light it goes away when she is filled up. Yes....Joyce has left her car like that twice, "honey can you go get gas for me".
And as John stated the fuel does cool the fuel pump but try explaining that to a woman! sheesh..........

I never plan to find out since I always fill up before the car gets to a quarter tank remaining. As for my wife, that's a different story. But I did use her "limp home mode" experience in May 2009 to improve her gas-pumping habits somewhat. "You better keep at least a half a tank of gas in that car to minimize the chance of another limp home mode fiasco", I told her. Since then, she hasn't come home with the "E" light lit up on the dash as she used to....

LMAO! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with a wife who is affected by the apparently strong repellent powers of gas stations! More than a few times my wife has asked to drive the Jag because she hasn't put gas in her van and doesn't have enough to get to work. Maybe that's her ploy to drive the Jag!?
I keep my Jag filled up all the time, but it's always one of those nice to know things about any vehicle I drive. My Toyota Tundra still had 26 litres in the tank when the low fuel light came on! I was just curious to know how much she had left after the light came on. I haven't taken her down to the warning light yet to fill her back up to see.
And that's good to know about the fuel pump. I knew it was in there, but didn't extrapolate that to the fuel cooling properties. Definitely going to let my wife know about that!![Icon Wink](https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
Thanks guys!

I had a brain fart one day and forgot to fill up, next thing you know, i look at the dash and it says 1 mile to empty. I freaked and started driving "nicely" hoping to get to the next gas station. I ended up drivin about 3 mile after it said 0 miles to empty. Closest i've ever been to runnin out. Hope that helps. My dad always used to say don't let it get too low or you any little debris can clog up your fuel filter so i always fill up around half a tank or so. I ran out the one day cuz my girl drove the car and never filled it. Damn women and gas stations. Need to bring back full service so they'll go and get gas. LOL

I get annoyed that the low fuel warning comes on at a quarter tank (I'm not an idiot, for chrissakes!), but I did lose my nerve last weekend when it said I had 3 miles left, and pulled into a gas station. I guess I'll never know ![Icon Wink](https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
In contrast, I've owned a number of oddball Italian cars that could go all day with the warning light flashing, but it would usually start well below a quarter tank (somewhere below an 8th). But then I had a '94 BMW 325i, and I learned the hard way in the first week of ownership to fill up immediately when the warning light came on -- that thing maybe only had 5 miles to go once the warning started. I think the way these warning lights work must be cultural...

Iwas taught to fill up at a quarter, so that's when I've always done it. Still, there was one occasion when the low fuel light came on for me, and the trip meter indicated that I still had 45 miles left of fuel at 18.5 mpg (about 2.4 gal).
This reminds me of a Top Gear episode a couple of years ago, where Jeremy Clarkson drove a diesel XJ from Basel, Switzerland to Blackpool, England on one tank of fuel. If you are at all familiar with Mr. Clarkson's personality, you would know that fuel economy is a foreign concept to him. Anyways, he manged to make it to Blackpool on the one tank, with the needle buried in the "E" and the trip meter indicating 0 miles of fuel left. Upon inspection of the fuel tank after the challenge, it was discovered that he had enough fuel for another 100 miles or so. Great episode.
Part I Part II Part III
This leads me to believe that Jaguar understates the true range, to protect us from ourselves, so we do not damage the cars by running them to empty.
