How insert Drive shaft inner

Hi Guys
I have searched for a day but I cannot find the answer to "How do I insert the inner drive shaft into the Diff".
The car is an S-type 2004 and needed the reluctor ring replaced. The drive shaft just slid out from the diff with a little knock with a hammer,
It does NOT just slide back in. Keeping the shaft straight and level it enters about an inch. Turning the shaft it does not turn and therefore I believe the spines are aligned but it will move no further - even with a few knocks on the outer spline (nut half replaced) with a club hammer.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your help,
Brian

Thanks, Andy
It does seem that it goes in as far as the ring but is blocked. Is there any position on the splines that the ring should be when inserting?
I cannot find an image of the ring - I take it that it should be partly open?
This all started as a very simple job. I bought the car knowing there was a fault with the ABS. I thought - just charge the battery - Nope. Just replace the sensor - Nope. Just hammer on a new reluctor ring - Nope. Had to take out the axle. Amazing how a planned 10-minute repair can take days!
Regards
