i have a x-type i love the car i did a few installs like navigation ..hid kit etc now my wife wants an s-type do you guys have any tips what to look for, whats a good year etc

Same concerns as with the X. Low mileage, service history, looks well taken care of. Actually, service history and condition are the most important. The '03 and up cars had a lot of things updated. Too many to list here. The interior was updated in '03 as well. The dash and console was updated. In '05 the rear quarters, tail lamps and decklid were changed as well as the hood, grill, and bumper. The '03 was the first year of the R supercharged. Also, '03 saw the 3.0 bump up to 235hp and the 4.0 become the 4.2 and get bumped up to 294hp. The R was rated at 390hp. Also, in 06 all trim got a mesh grill and in 08 the R bumper was installed on all trim as well. It was the only year that fog lamps were not standard on the 3.0 and 4.2 trim cars. There are some real rare cars, like the sport trim cars that came with Aluminum trim, the 08 satin edition cars, with only dash, shifter, ashtray, and door spears in a satin finish wood (no switch trim, shifter, or steering wheel with wood). Then there were the 5 speed stick 6cyl cars. These were available from '99 through '03, as of '04 it was dropped in North America. So this was a little more winded than normal, but hope it helps.

They ride a lot softer than the X. The 3.0 and 4.2 get just about the same fuel economy. If I had to do it over again, I would hold out for a 4.2 car. Very quiet inside. One of the quietest cars I've driven. Moderate body roll in the turns, but will stick a lot better than the seat of your pants would think. I love mine, just wish I had the 4.2. The R would be nice too, but the 4.2 just seems like a great balance between pratical and fun.

Well, I'm from the snow belt of northeastern Ohio, and I didn't have a single problem getting around in mine.

First, good job on the kit install. Yes, the S-Type is rear wheel drive. It does have traction control and Dynamic Stability Control which works well in marginal conditions. I had the same concerns you did regarding winter conditions which I was leaning towards the X-Type. However, I found out that the S-Type is pretty good in snow or ice. It is a very comfortable car and easy to drive. I found that it handles very well, although a bit on the firm side, which I prefer. I'm assuming you'll keep the X-Type and get her the S-Type so at least you'll still have a ride. Once you get her into the S-Type, you probably won't be able to get her out of it.

I would also recommend going with a 2003 or later model for the same reasons mentioned earlier.

The S-Types are rear wheel drives. Mine has the 4.2 and 6 speed ZF automatic. They're equipped with traction control and stability control as well. I bought mine just after the first of the year, and, she seemed to handle light snow decently enough. I previously had 2 X-Types - a 2.5 and a 3.0 model. I live in WV and, while I miss the AWD, I really enjoy the performance capabilities and better fuel economy of the S.

I have a set of General Altimax HP's on mine. Got them from tire rack. Very well rated. Did great through the second half of an Ohio winter.

yes and dont wory the DSC on the s-type is very good

 

i have the dsc on my x-type ..i take it of in the snow and put it on in the rain..does it work good on s-type in the snow.....

 

I never turn off DSC in mine. Unless I'm playing! Seriously, even in deep snow, simply driving smart with the throttle and brakes, I never had an issue this winter in Ohio, even with the crappy Michelin tires I started the winter with. DSC won't replace the laws of physics nor will it boost a lack of talent, but it does a great job of maintaining straight line stability and minimizing wheel spin.

 

I don't use mine in the snow! Now, I wish someone would do that upgrade in an S and show pictures like this gentleman did. Fantastic!

 

Maybe after the baby comes... The "O Great Pregnant One" will kick my *** if I get a Nav/DVD system for the car. I have the list ready, It'll cost about 600. Just have to wait.....
