i have a x-type the wifes buying a s-type...what to look for

Well, yes and no. The climate control module is different, as is the location of the hazard lamp switch module, but the audio modules are the same. That is why dash kits for them are listed as working on both the S and the X. Also, the entire center stack is very slightly larger on the S vs the X.

Where do you live? I'm in Akron, which is in Northeast Ohio, pretty much the only part of Ohio that isn't flat. I've gotten up and down hilly streets with mine. It did much better in the snow with crappy tires than my Accord ever did with good all season tires. Actually, my Accord was the first car I ever got stuck in the 12 years I've lived here. My Jeeps before were better than the S, but they were trucks. My best advice would be to go for it, tell her to stay away from unplowed streets until she has a chance to practice. Then, when it snows, go with her to an empty parking lot and let it loose. Get a feel for how it all works, with and without DSC. That's what I did to teach my 17 year old brother in law how to drive in snow. Have to add, the laughing cop that stopped to watch us was priceless. Here was a greying middle aged guy flogging a Jag around. He did pull in to ask what the "heck" we were doing. When told, he only said to be careful and he wished more people would do this, maybe he'd be going to less accidents. Sorry for the long rant, but I truly believe that rear drive is the way to go. I will concede that AWD is better in poor traction conditions but not nearly as entertaining on dry pavement. If / When she gets it, you'll have to try the same "practice" on a dry parking lot with the DSC off. Nothing like going into a turn with the backend sliding just a bit, and realizing you're doing it in a leather and wood fitted luxury car!

Sorry if I sound like I'm knit-picking, but I'm not sure what your talking about. If you are referring to the manual park brake years, that would be 00 through 02, and they had the Ford 5spd auto. From 2003 and up they had the electronic parking brake and the ZF 6spd auto. Unless of course you are talking about the stick shift cars, and they only had the electronic parking brake for one year (2003) since it was dropped in 2004 (in North America). But the stick shift cars are sooooo rare (in North America), I doubt that. I know the ZF has a reputation for acting up, but they are really pretty good transmisions.

S Type R - Not Good
S Type 3.0 with snows - good
I live in Mass, and the only option I have with my STR is to get a whole new tire and wheel snow package, cant find any snow tires to fit the originals.

My brakes are unbelievable, brake dust galore, yes, but these Brembos work better than my Porsche's.
You need to figure out what S Stype you want. If snow is that big of a concern to you than maybe the 6 Cyl is best. There are big differences between the trims, and you should figure out your priorities i.e. snow handling, max performance etc., then take it from there. Good Luck.

I would get an '03 or up 4.2 V8. The STR is great for an enthusiast, but they are also more complicated. Most complaints about STR's come from people who don't realize what they are buying and thrown off by the cost to keep them running. The V6 and V8 cars are pretty much the same. The more optioned the car, the more complex it becomes. I would go for the V8, just because it is a much more flexible power train. The V6 will get the job done, but from my experience, it also has to work harder. I had the chance to use a V8 for a couple of days as a loaner and found it was much better to drive plus it got the exact same gas mileage as my V6 over the same commute.

well, its 400hp for starters........all one color, (i really dont dig all the chrome on the other models) big brakes, strong motor, and one helluva smile when you hit the gas. HOWEVER, maintaining it is another story. I knew what i was getting myself into, plus im pretty good with cars. So ill let others add to this too.
