Default I need your opinion about the local shop

Hi guys i am here to ask your opinion about my situation

My jag s type 3.0 has been repaired on September 20; valve cover gasket on

both side,Cats and spark plugs. I have spent $1700

Today I just changed lower O-ring at intake manifold. Soon, I realized that

there were fume and smoke coming out from the passenger side.

Is it possible that the valve cover gasket on passenger side has been blown out

within only 2 months? I cautiously suspect that the local shop did not even

touch or repair. Furthermore, my car started blinking of RPM after took out my

car from the shop. In addition, the local owner is a college senior who was

famous for blood sucker. I am going to go to his shop and talk to him

tomorrow. Is there any chance that i can make him work on my car for free

or get my money back? What should I do?

When I changed the O ring, I could see oil coming form the lower Oring part

Is this normal?

In order for you to obtain help, please provide the year of the vehicle as parts of the inlet manifold have changed from the earlier cars.

Exactly which 'o-ring' are you referring to? If you are unable to describe the part and location, a photo will help.

There may be some engine oil present in the inlet manifold as the crankcase breather is a closed system for emission control.

An excess of oil in the manifold would possibly indicate worn piston rings, or a breather circuit plugged with sludge causing excessive crankcase pressure. If this is indeed the case, other gaskets/seals can leak or seep.

How many kilometres/miles on the vehicle and what is its service history like?

Depending on the year of your vehicle, the inlet manifold may need to be removed to access the RH cam/valve cover.

With the inlet manifold removed, it is also good practice to replace the crankcase breather elbow as they typically perish and collapse with age.

I am confused, did you only replace the lower IMT O-ring or both? Normally both are changed at the same time. Although its usually the lower that leaks oil.

Now if you had the valve cover gaskets replaced as stated, there are 2 spots where RTV (silicone) sealant need to be dabbed onto the heads for proper sealing. Is it possible your mechanic did not use the sealant?

+1 on the silicone sealant.

If you perform maintenance and repairs to your own vehicle, it is always a good idea to obtain the JTIS manual for reference and proper procedures, such as adding the silicone sealer to the contact points for the cam/valve cover gasket where the timing cover meets the front of the cylinder head.

The shop charged you almost 2x too much. You needed to be here before you authorized repairs.

Thank you for your recommendation
I have prepared JTIS for replacement!

joycesjag
I have changed for both and Can you tell me what exactly RTV sealant is?

bfsgross
Yes Now i realize that proper shop/dealership is the best option
To add that, he is my college senior and he said he can do it for cheap and trustworthy
Apparently, He is not

JgaXkr
He didnot replace it He said he had clean the cats and put it back
I think that is illegal

'RTV' silicone sealant is available at most automotive parts houses. Choose one with the correct application and colour that is oil resistant.

What does 'clean the cats and put it back' mean? One either replaces the catalysts themselves or the entire pipe, depending on the locale and laws.
