It has been towed to my local garage where a first rough diagnosis could be something in the top end (don't know exactly) but have left it with them because I am not in a rush since I have another car, hopefully will have an update in round about 2 weeks.

Initial diagnosis could be with rod bearing failure or crankshaft bearing failure.

Engine is coming out and stripped down maybe next week. Will assess further then

I felt quite sick when I first read this thread and watched the video. Too nice a car to bin it if it can be fixed. I'm pleased to hear you've not given up.
I've been watching out for any progress and I hope it works out for you. Nice car !

cheers Busa, its always a hard decision to make when things like this happen. I would rather spend £350 on taking out the engine and completely strip it down to see the prospect of repair than just sell it for scrap.

I have mentally set my upper budget (i.e £1 higher and no way) to £3000, hopefully it can be done, heres hoping

Damn shame alright !!
If the damage is not the top end , and it is infact the bottom end that has failed ,
then it is likely curtains for this engine . Espeshaly if it starved for oil .
Not the end of the world though ,as there is a STR engine on eBay.uk for £2400 .

If you decide to purchase a used engine, it may be a good idea to have the rod and main bearings checked and replaced, if needed, prior to installation into the vehicle.

From the looks of things, a good choice indeed.
