Inlet or intake, yes.
I think the underlying issue is how the air flows.
It pulses - caused by the way the cylinders take in air.
Also, air (like everything with mass) has inertia.
So it's to do with impedance matching, sound, efficiency (and probably other stuff I don't know about).
There must be pages about this stuff if you do web searches...
