Default Insuring an S-Type

Got my auto insurance bill in the mail yesterday and found that it costs more to insure an '08 S-Type than it does a '13 Lexus ES350...

Waiting to see how annual tax bill compares.

Try changing insurer.

>Try changing insurer.

Not sure that would make any difference in the relative costs. You'd think that everyone was using the same data for rates.

It's obvious that the insurance company considers a Jaguar to be a higher premium car with a greater expected repair cost.

I don't believe they use the same data. That's why the quotes can be at least 10 times higher from one insurer than another for the same car.

I can say with great certainty that they do not all use the same data.

But that's not what I'm talking about here. This is the same insurer pricing two different cars. My belief is that other insurers would, likewise, charge me more for my Jaguar than the newer Lexus.

I'm sure that if I shopped around I could save money on both cars, but from the same insurer the Jaguar would still cost more.

Try it. I expect they wouldn't.

You might want to make sure you are not being quoted as an S Type R, this would make a difference.

I tried it with an on-line quote generator. The Lexus was more expensive in four different quotes.

As a follow-up, I received an email giving me eight quotes for each vehicle. The variation in cost for each vehicle from company to company was shocking- the most expensive was almost three times the cost of the least expensive.

There was no real consistency in the cost ranking by company to company when comparing each vehicle. The cheapest company for the Jag was middle of the pack for the Lexus.

In combining both vehicles on one policy to take advantage of a discount, neither of the cheapest companies was the best deal.

Selecting an auto club discount (CAA,AAA, RAA type) changed the order again.

Sigh.

The Jag was less expensive to insure than the Lexus in all cases and combos.

If you're not shopping your insurance policies at least every eighteen months to two years, you are throwing money away. Most of these companies get fat, lazy, and happy on the backs of their long-time customers who assume they always get the best deal because they've been with their insurance company forever, never bother to look around, and just mail their premium check in at renewal time. So start shopping around now. As previously mentioned, you will be very surprised at the better deals from the hungry companies who want your business and are willing to earn it....

Funny you mention the STR? Before I bought mine I was concerned that a Hotrod would be more expensive to insure.

After talking to my insurance guy the driver completely over shadows the car when it comes to rates. I am so old now I can drive any kind of crazy hot car for about the same price. Just keep the tickets down so they don't raise the rates!

I asked my agent why the insurance is so high for the Jaguar S Type. She told me that there are statistically relatively a lot of claims and accidents with them and that's what they base the rates on. I guess there's too many old farts hot rodding them around, me included. Insurance is relatively cheap on a Prius.

Just shopped my auto insurance. My 2005 S Type is higher than my wife's 2014 Camry and equal to both my older Corvettes added together. I wound up staying with my present company after they found a few more " discounts " they could apply to my policy after I told them I found cheaper rates. If you shop, be sure to compare apples to apples. Jon89, you are correct about insurance companies getting fat and lazy.
