Intermittent No Crank/Start

Intermittent No Crank/Start
2005 Jag S-Type 120,000 miles.
I have an intermittent starting issue thats getting worse. I turn the key, no crank, no start. Battery is fine. This doesnt happen every time I try to start. It does usually start fine but sometimes wont do anything except I do hear the relay click and a high pitched humming under the intake manifold, all electrical systems come on and work fine. Its recently gotten worse, about every other day. I have had it towed three times from work to my home and then it starts up fine the next morning. I dont want to pay hundreds or possibly over $1000 to a mechanic to figure this out. I am able to do some work on the car myself and if I can figure this out maybe I can fix it. Have a new starter ordered and it might fix the problem but wont really know until it wont start again. No check engine light and no codes on the OBD2. Anyone familiar with this issue and a fix?

When it acts up, look at the indicator lights on the shifter J-gate. If P or N is not illuminated, the starter is inhibited.
If you don’t have P or N on, that means the computer thinks you’re in a different gear, based on position feedback from the transmission. If so, the most likely culprit is loose bolts where the shift cable mounts to the transmission.

I wonder if this could be a security system problem. That’s easy to rule out.
Lock the car with the key fob. Press the lock button a second time to set the alarm system. The horn should chirp once. Watch the little red light at the center base of the windshield. It should flash once every 3 seconds or so to show the system is armed. Now press the key fob unlock button twice to unlock all the doors. The red light should go out. Now hop in the driver's seat and turn the key to ON (Not start yet). The red light should come on solid ONCE for about 3 seconds and then go out. If it flashes anything after that, you've got a stored fault.
