Jag Tech specific question: New Key
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-...Q5fAccessories
Here's my question, since these are 100 dollars online, what would i be looking at to add it to my vehicle??? And is it true about the bar code?? Would this be something that a dealer has to cut, or can a locksmith make it and program it? I have no problem going to the dealer, by the way. I have an original flip key and valet key, however i wouldnt mind having the 2nd flip key as the valet key is being used for a remote start bypass. (which i know i have to remove if i take it to the dealer to have new keys programmed) Thanks in advance.

Not a tech, but that looks a LOT like the key I just got for my 2003 STR. I have tried several lock smiths around town and all said that they could not program the key.
Dealer wanted $550 for a new key ($350 of it was the remote and metal shank). I got mine for $130 (very similar to the one you are showing) from Transponder Island. I will still have to pay the dealer $200 for the programming and cutting of the key.
Mine came in two pieces and is in the original Jaguar packaging. No bar code inside, but there are bar codes on the packaging which will remain intact until I take it to the dealer for programming. Dealer quoted my 2-3 hours for the programming and they needed the car to do it...
I purchased my car used and it only has the one key with remote. I need 2 keys available...

I found on another car (Porsche) that locksmiths could NOT cut blank keys I bought (the angles of cut required not being settable on their equipment) and furthermore that dealers were not easily persuaded to do so either, their reason (claimed as) being that if they cut it and it didn't work then it would leave a problem as to whether the blank was wrong or they'd cut it wrong.
I had a working key so stuck the issue on the back-burner i.e. never did resolve it
(These were not keys needing to be programmed into the car.)

First key/remote programming should never be more than a flat hour programming fee. Second there should be no problem with that remote and key programming, but i have never heard/seen of a bar code needed for programming. Theres is nothing on the car to program a key remote and enter a bar code, thats just plain bs. You have to have ids/wds to communicate with the security locking module to marry keys and remotes(required on stypes, can marry remotes to other models without going to dealer, but not the keys)

Brutal, is $200 too much for the key cutting and programming? Should I try a different dealer? I am currently looking at going to Millennium Motor Cars in Plano, TX. Any other Dallasites know of a better dealer to go to?

I'd recommend Autobahn, but after the gas you'd spend coming all the way over here, you'd spend all the $$ you just saved. An hour should be around $150 out the door. For piece of mind, $200 isn't bad, and that is the cap...it could be less if you got lucky and they weren't busy when you arrived.

$200 is a little high if you already have the key. Shouldnt be more than 1.0hr of labor to program. Just depends how much they charge you to cut the key. At our dealer we dont charge to cut the key, just the programing.
