Jaguar S type 4.2 V8 2005
Good afternoon.
I am a x type owner and have a neighbor who is looking at a 2005 S type AWD with the 4.2 V8 with 52,000 miles on it from the Dealership. I need to know of any issues with that engine and Tranny as mine X type is a 2.5 V6 with a 5 speed manual. And i am not famililar with that engine. I am aware of all the annoying things on the Jag but i still love mine.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
John.

Hi John,
As far as I know S-Types are RWD only. The 2005 4.2 V8s are fairly reliable though. Most of the bugs in the early 4.0 models have been corrected by the 4.2 V8. These centered around the camshaft tensioners and the water pump (as I remember it). By 2005 Jaguar had refined the S-Types.
Hope this helps,
Mike

i have driven an s type 4.2 V8 for a few weeks total, a 2006 model, and i loved it, combine the soft cruiser feel of the 3.0 with wanting to run like my R. Of course its not as fast as the R but im sure it will hit 60 in less then 6 secs...plus the price is a lot less then an R and hardly, if anymore then, a 3.0 pre owned. They are just hard to find.

If they have a AWD S Type, Buy it. It is a one of a kind prototype since there never was a AWD S Type! Really, that is what I wished I had gotten instead of the 3.0. Just as good economy for my driving style and much better power! It's a good car. The 4.2 is a Jaguar engine and the trans is a ZF unit. The 2.5 in the X is a Ford unit, I'm not sure who developed the transaxle, but I do know if you're from the states it's AWD system is based on a modified front drive transaxle.
