Unhappy Jaquar S type engine fault on LA highway

I was driving my Jaquary 2006 S Type down LA highway at 70mph when the engine light came on and engine fault appeared. It totally shut down I could not accelorate at all. i still had power steering and I coasted across 5 lanes and down a ramp. When I turned off the engine for 10 min it started and engine fault was gone. I could have been killed. I took it into Jaquar and they said there was an excellerator softwear fault and they are going to update the soft wear. I am still worried about driving it down a highway. Has anyone else had a similiar problem.

Thanks Margaret margaret@mdenneny.com

Very rare - if they're right. Don't assume they are.

Far more likely to be a failing battery or damp in the trunk (remove spare to check).

There may be codes so get a cheap OBD tool (see General Tech forum) and read them.

Hello Margaret, welcome to the forum.

Might I suggest that you follow forum protocol and introduce yourself in the New Member Section. It would also help us to help you if you would put your MY (Model Year) and engine in your signature. Very easy to do.

Was it raining by chance? The reason I ask is awhile back we had a rash of that behavior and it turns out the TB (throttle body) electrical had gotten damp from rain.

I had the limp mode problem and it was a failing battery, but, I've had the problem happen several more times and I think there's an electrical leak, maybe a random one. Possibly the throttle body has stuck relay? Didn't someone spray wd40 on relay contacts and not need to replace the tb? Someone also had a damp trunk problem which corroded an unused, dangling connector, a trailer type connector, and that corrosion grew into a short. I installed a batt disconnect switch and carry a spare battery, but the problem doesn't happen for six months at a time.

No relay I can think of for the TB. But any chafed wire that keeps the modules alive can be a cause and there are more than a few

Steering column lock is a fairly common cause.

Margaret, the dealership may have reflashed your ECU but that wasn't the problem. As my brothers chimed: water from windshield seeping onto throttle body connector, weak battery, moisture on connectors in trunk.

Do you think she was killed by her car losing power?

Seriously, you might have an accident by losing power, (but maintaining steering and braking as she described), but killed?

Methinks Margaret embellishes her narrative to gain immediacy.

"Oh my God!, there is a fuel drip coming from behind the fender liner, the car could explode!"

Yes, maybe if I parked it over a fire, for a half an hour.

Am I a meanie?
