Just bought an S-Type
Hello, coming over from the X-Type list where I've been participating for the last couple of years while owning, and loving, an '05 3.0l auto.
This past weekend I traveled down to northern NJ to pick up an '08 4.2l with 48k miles and 9 months left on its Jaguar Select warranty.
I'd been looking to upgrade to an S-Type for a couple of years and when I found this one I had to jump. They gave me $4.6k for my X-Type (too low but hey, they just made it easy and eliminated what would have been a big issue...) off the $22.8k price of the S-Type. Felt the price was fair for a beautiful car that still had factory warranty coverage!
But I'm very happy and glad to be here! I'm looking forward to participating with all you other S-Type and STR owners.
Cheers

Now, Since it is a 2008, it actually has the R front fascia..If it does not have fog lights, find them. They made a set that bolts in the fascia and they are plenty rare... you can get them where the R owners can't because of the oil coolers.
Actually, do an auto trader search on just 2008 S Types.. While there aren't many, all the V8's had the non-staggered R wheels. The 3.0's got the 18" Tritons.

Just had the mud flaps I found on eBay installed by my local wrench (could'a done it, but thought I'd ask him to do it but also put the car up on the lift and take a good look at the bottom) and he found that both my front fender liners were all cracked and split. Has that happened with anyone else's S-Type. Funny that it was both of them and the were split at the bottom both ahead and behind the wheel on both sides.
Perplexed, I am...

Yes very common. There is a small lip or spoiler in front of the tire that is part of the wheel well liner. When you hit a curb it breaks this tab off. They are sometimes called Aero-Tabs.
I have front parking sensors and both of mine were broken when I got the car. Too expensive to replace. I think the wheel well liners were $200 each?
This is what they look like. This is a LS but about the same.

Well those are pretty stupid...
Also mine are cracked behind the wheel, too. Going to the dealer next Monday to get the auto-leveling of one headlamp fixed. I'll be asking them about the liners. Perhaps they'll be covered under Jaguar Select (along with the ****-poor chrome on the wheels where all four wheels are badly pitted...)
Lov'n my new 4.2l, just thought it would have more low-RPM ommph. Haven't really probed it's performance (much... ;-) but was surprised how fast it finds taller gears forcing multi-down-shifts when I boot it on the highway. Get'n better mileage than my X-Type though :-)

I could not get Jaguar to replace them when my 2005 STR was under factory warranty.
Since they were broken by hitting something it's like asking them to fix a dent caused when you backed into a tree.
The reason for the tabs is fuel mileage. The idea is to try and force as much air as possible around the tires instead of it hitting the rolling tire to create even more turbulence. They are on almost all cars now but were kind of a new idea back in 2000 when the car came out. Every little bit helps when it comes to fuel economy!

>You mentioned headlight auto leveling
Just heard from the dealer:
"The passenger side headlamp assembly is broken internally, this is not covered by select edition warranty..$1660.00 to replace the assembly,…,"
Not happy about this at all. I did look at that thread and understand the fix using the screw. But I just got this car and I want it to be right, at least at this point. So, I guess I'm going to have to face up to the bill and have the dealer do the job.
But if it happens again, or to the other side, then "screw-fix" it'll be!!!
