so... if I'm understanding this correctly, I shouldn't have to reprogram a FOB after replacing the battery? So if I replaced the battery because the FOB stopped working, and it still doesn't work, it's not a programming issue, but the FOB is no good?

Do I understand this correctly?

Yes that is the most likely case.

When the battery begins to run down, the remote loses its range and becomes slowly less effective.

If you remove the battery you will not have to reprogram the remote.Replace the battery and the remote will work.

If your remote works fine one day and suddenly stops the next day it is not usually the battery. If you replace the battery and it does not work, the remote is most likely defective.

I've seen at least a couple of FOB related bulletins at https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...lletins-10586/

One of them says "It is possible that following a vehicle being parked for a length of time, overnight for example, that the
vehicle will not respond to the remote transmitter." - could it be your case?

Another recommends dealers to insert an isolating padding inbetween buttons and the circuit board b/c of static that can potentially kill the fob, I've opened mine and it was there - I'm lucky.

I replaced my fob battery and did not need to reprogram. Do check the button contacts are OK inside and that no shorting out can occur (thus the pad).

Another thing that took me some time to figure out was that the battery needed to be inserted "upside down", - looks up and + down

Default Brand New Remote w/ Uncut Flip Keys (2 @ $164.95)

ebay: BRAND NEW - UNCUT KEYS w/ REMOTE - GUARANTEED TO WORK

I just purchased two keys for $164.95 (FREE shipping) and will provide an update on how things turn out. I'm still searching for the best "current" deal to have the keys cut and programmed.

I went the ebay route since local dealers in Maryland and Northern Virginia are currently quoting $320-$366 for each key and $130 to program the keys. I have no problem paying dealers a bit more but the difference is just too big for keys. Last evening on ebay I saw USED remote key fobs for ~$10-$50 which would require blank keys that sell for ~$5-$30.

This part is compatible with 23 vehicle(s).

Default UK key supplier for 2004 X Type circuit board repair

Has anyone in the UK had good dealings with suppliers who fix faulty key fob's. My X Type key (I only have one) had the battery replaced but it still only works intermittently so I assume it is the circuit board needing replaced/fixed.

Appreciate any help if you know of a quick and reasonably priced locksmith who does a fast postal service.

I think someone on the UK forum posted about it and that they'd sent fob(s) away to a guy on ebay with good results.

I was very surprised to find that the Jaguar dealer in West Palm Beach, FL. only charged $10 each to cut the key blanks I provided. The parts man did them while I waited. He was the only one I could find that had the special cutter required.

I see that Partsgeek are selling Lincoln LS fobs that look a LOT like the S-Type one. Does anyone know if they are suitable for our cars? Mine is a 2001 (pre-facelift) car.

That sucks... when I bought my car, the previous owner had lost one key so he only had one keyfob, and I don't feel at ease having only one key for the car, but the dealers want a ridiculous price for programming a key....

It's a hard car to steal. Some things just cost.

Just imagine the cost when you lose it.

I just got a quote from a local locksmith for $280 for a transponder key (just a simple key, no fob)... but that is not that much different than the dealership....

Phoenix, not reputed as the cheapest of dealers.

Have you tried all the local dealers, we have a member with a shop in Decatur who might be able to help you.

Yes, you are right, I'll have to check all the local dealers in person (I tried by phone or by email but it looks like you have to go there in person to get a price...)
