Default Key Fob questions

My 2003 came with only one key and the fob isn't working to lock/unlock/lights or trunk even with a new battery. What's my most affordable option to get a new one? And what's the cost to get it cut to work with my ignition?

You may get by for under $300 if you work really hard at it and are lucky. Firstly, you must understand you need two FOBs in order to program one. The experienced techs have reported some success in wrapping a "donor" fob from another S-Type in foil and fooling the system into believing you have two....but that still requires you to find a friend with a FOB to loan you.....and it could be that the one you have is no-bueno and won't work no matter who/how/when/why it is programmed...but it IS much more common for them to lose their code than to totally crap-out. Others have reported contacting certain Locksmiths and having success getting a second key cut, 2 keys and FOBs programmed, all for $75 or something....Do a search on "key" and "FOB" and enjoy the read.

Also, beware buying keys for cutting on eBay - I managed to purchase one that the dealer said he couldn't cut.

May be its set on the rong MHz read this link and give it a try !

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...6/#post1161775

Also my lock smith programmed one key only to my s type r , and later re programmed two keys to the car , he said that if you have 1 / 2 or three keys it didn't matter , he could tick the box on his Obd2 programmer to do 1 2 or 3 keys but if you want all of them to work tha must be programmed all at the same time , a button on each key had to be pressed within 4 seconds of each other ! Then entered and all done , my new key I bought
Compleat from eBay for $160nzd and does not matter what MHz it is as can be swiched to the correct one using steps in the link above

The key fob I found out today, is working but for some reason the car is not receiving the signal. The guy tested it with his machine and his machine picked up the signal from the key fob on all the buttons but the car will not receive any signal. Any idea what this may be?

I suppose its possible the security module is toast...but I'd be more suspicious of "the guy." Has he successfully programmed any FOB to a 2003 S-Type before? 2001-02 doesn't count and I believe there were some changes in the general area of programmable modules in 06/07 timeframe. I would expect more problems than just an inoperative FOB if the security module is knackered, though. Not sure about S-types, but I believe on X300's, the antenna for receiving the FOB signal was in the rear windscreen. Any chance you have a replacement rear screen with no antenna?

Try disconnecting the vehicle battery for a minute, then reconnecting. This will reset the security system and might just resolve the issue.

I only had a valet key when I bought my '00. I found a locksmith 200 mi. away who cut 2 full-function keys and programmed 2 fobs for $200. Keep looking around for someone who can cut Tibbe keys and has programmed Jags before; they are out there. You can't do it remotely though, you have to program it while in the car.

I tried this Also with no luck. I tried another programming method that says to switch the key on and off 8 times ending the 9th turn in the on position. When I tried this and although it didn't work , I all of a sudden got 2 messages on my display. One said DSC not available and the other said ABS fault. Messages went away when I switch the car off and then started it.

Car Battery tested good. New energizer battery in fob. Going tomorrow to see costs of an aftermarket keyless entry/alarm/remote start install.

A remote starter will need to permanently dedicate your only key to activate the ignition transponder, so then you will have no backup.

It is also really easy to make a mess of an aftermarket install, leaving with a 2 ton brick, especially on a car that has security problems already or by someone without the proper knowledge.

I strongly suggest getting a proper fix for the factory system.
