looking to buy my first Jag
I am looking for a 2005 or 2006 S type Jag for my next car. I know nothing about them and my husband says I can't have one unless he is comfortable with basic maintenance. He wants to be able to change oil, etc. What I don't know is, is that even possible or must all service be done by a mechanic?
I have test driven a 4.2 and 3. Obviously, there is more "varoom" in the one engine. That is not important to me, only steady dependability. With a little flash.

Basic servicing as you describe is as easy as most other modern cars, but why would you want to do this yourself - crawling underneath to unscrew the drain plug, getting oil down your arm unscrewing the oil filter cartridge etc ? Brake pad jobs can be a little bit more difficult due to the electric handbrake on the rear, which has to be reset when the rear pads are changed, and only Jaguar agents have the reset tools, although somebody will no doubt have a "work-round" by now.
The key thing is that basic servicing does not demand you go to a Jaguar Main Agent, you can use a reliable Joe Local who you may already know, or a Jaguar specialist, being a firm that specialises in Jaguar servicing even though not Jaguar-affiliated.

By 2005 Jaguar had just about got all the bugs out of the then current generation of cars. Maintenance is pretty simple. Change oil once a year (10k). Everything else, like air filters, fuel filters, spark plugs are 30k to 60k to 100k miles. Jaguar are no more difficult to work on than any other car and parts are generally available from national auto parts stores and on line.
I would suggest that you get a copy of an owner's manual and use it as a check list to inspect all the functions of a car under consideration.
Check out the Jaguar web site for the owner manuals: http://www.ownerinfo.jaguar.com/extf...prod/index.jsp
You should expect that dealer repairs are going to cost more than a Ford . . . but then it isn't really a Ford.
There is a long list of significant repair issues with earlier, as in pre '03 cars, but by '05 Jaguar was as good as any other high end car and better than some. Check out the BMW and MB forums to verify that statement.
If you want to see the check list for the earlier cars here is a link but they really do not apply to the cars by '05.

The best part of Jaguar ownership is that you have this forum to discuss issues with your new found Jaguar friends. Don't miss the opportunity to own one.

I would suggest that you post in the S-type forum. You are looking at the right year of car as most all issues had been worked out by then. I was looking at the S-type myself before I finally decided to go with an XJR, but the S-Type is a great model as well. If you can live without the horse power of the larger V8, then you can let your husband know that the 3.0 V6 is a staple Ford design and is very servicable by a DIY. The S-Type and the Lincoln LS models share some key drive train components, which should help him in being comfortable with this model.
Again, I would spend some time in the S-Type forum, and maybe make this same post there, as you should get a pretty lively response from tech's and actual owners of that same model.
As a new Jaguar owner, I would say you will be very happy with your purchase should you finally go through with it!
