Default Looking to purchase an R soon, should I stay away from HM cars?

Currently own a 02 530i and I do enjoy driving it but the looks of the S-type plus the current prices of these make them very temping to buy one.

My 5-series currently has 110k on it and though it has its whistles and bells it feels very solid and tight.

I came across this R on ebay:
Jaguar : S-type | eBay

And was wondering if I should stay away from High Mileage R's...

Any tips and advise will be appreciated!

Hi,

There is no mileage based "limit" as to when things go bad. Basically just like any other used car - have it checked out prior to purchase if you are not willing/able to do so yourself.

I strongly suggest you use the SEARCH function on this forum to locate additional information on buying a used STR or S Type - there is a ton of good advice and info to be had - as a general rule we request that you do use the SEARCH function for items like this and then if stumped or you can't find an answer, post up.

Welcome to the forum and hope to hear that you will be joining the ranks of STR/S Type ownership.

I just made a thread about that car heh. If you want to keep the car a long time, that many miles is not the way to go, unless you can get it REALLY cheap, like 6 or 7 grand. Try and get one with 40,000 miles. They are on autotrader and ebay all over the place for 16-18k.

See if you can knock that guy down to 19k. I bet you can do it. You won't have to worry about too much with that one..

If you think that's a "fair" dealer price, then I want to make you my customer....

That car is worth 9500 full boat retail @ 110k, Wholesale is 6500-7000ish

Take care,

George

Agreed, that is a really nice car, less than 28k miles and looks nearly new.

Look at the carfax that right there makes it not worth what they are asking. Its been in an accident thats documented on carfax so it had a black mark in its record that automatically drops its value. Like every says only consider the higher mileage one if they drop that price drastically. I got my 05 last year with 60000 miles and a clean carfax for about what that one is at. Be patient and keep an eye out and the perfect R will show up for you. If you can get that other one for a cheaper price definitly consider that one.

First off for that kind of cash, the dealer should have replaced the missing drivers side blinker.

Also the exhaust (though seems stock) looks really funny to me.

I am definetly with George on the price!

As Vance850 put it "clean carfax" ???? With an accident reported??? Not very clean to me!

As George suggests; tell em $9500 is max. Further, as a ploy to show them you understand their STR has depreciated more than they're willing to admit, ask them if they know of another STR for sale. This may both prod them back to reality and affirm your steadfastness. Or...negotiate with the other party with the low mileage STR. You'll really dig the STR's prodigous hp and trq. Good luck and looking forward to you joining us.

Good eye Rick I didnt pay too much attention to the pics but your right that drivers side exhaust is hanging low. Potentially a broken mount maybe reengineered hanger using an actual "hanger". Maybe rigged up their own exhaust uncorrectly and used the stock tips cause they do seem to stick out just a tad farther then my 05, that may just be because of it hanging though. Maybe just went to a hack shop that did a horrible job on the exhaust. Definitly warrants futher investigating if interested and for that price they better just replace it will an Arden or Milltek. Who knows could be alot of different things??

Rick,

Remember the silver 05 one in Vienna, Virgina? Silver with a black gut, one owner car etc. 108k miles? Wanted 10,500 on ebay - no one touched it.

I had him down to 8800 and walked away because I wanted the first # to start with a 7 lol.

Take care,

George

I don't know how yo. Guys are finding these cars. I just walked from my fifth 03-04 R looking for a deal on one. I haven't had any luck getting under 11k on 70-90k mile 03-04 cars. I thought maybe the owners or dealers would call me back after a while but so far all of them have sold for close to asking 12-13K so far.

The hunt continues, working on one in NC now.

I have a dealer license albeit that isn't MUCH help in finding an R. It does give me wholesale pricing info etc to know what they paid (or close to it).

You can get an 03-04 for 10k if you are persistent.

There was one I passed on up here 03, 69k miles, black with black gut. Had HRE wheels, as well as the stock STR zeus wheels, needed fuel senders. Advertised for 10,500 she was willing to take 9500. The fuel sender issue put me off, I would have taken that car at 8500.

Rick that other thing we talked about may be becoming a reality....

Take care,

George

If you meant Raleigh, NC thats exactly where I live. Is it dark silver (Quartz) with a black grill surround. If so that is the exact town I live in and could check it out for you and snap some photos if I see any problems. Rick thats the one I had showed you that I was trying to trade out some of the mods he had but he wouldn't do it.

LOL yea sorry hacked the spelling. It's that exact car with the Arden Shocks/springs and flat black grill. I just got an email from the guy and pretty sure I am going to get it but he has two people looking at it this weekend. I can't get there untill mon/tue so I might miss it if someone pulls the trigger before me.
