loose chrome strip for how much? !!!
I noticed a loose chrome strip above the window on driver's side door. It had pulled away and it looked like some of the plastic clips holding it were broken so I stopped in at Jaguar to get it fixed. The mechanic looked at it and said I needed clips and a new chrome strip. The parts guy said it cost $158 for the strip. OK, I was born at night but it wasn't last night. There must be another way. The chrome strip itself looks fine so I assume there's a way to reattach it. Anybody got an idea how to fix this?

The plastic clips degrade, loosen up, and allow the chrome strips to pull away from the sill - common problem. Just buy a few of the plastic clips from the dealership and repair it yourself. Quite a number of us have done that. Very intuitive, just take your time and don't crimp the chrome strip. There are several threads here in the S-Type section that walk you through the process. I remember one from Rick (joycesjag) that include photos so you can see how the new clips fit into the sill. You may only need a couple of new clips but I would purchase at least four or five. If you don't use them up on this initial repair, you'll be using them in the future as more of your original clips fail....

I don't think epoxy would help, when I did mine I put the double side tape across both rails and only cut out pockets where the clips went in.

chazaroo, here is the picture of the "X" clips again below.
When I first did this job, I was misled and was instructed to use the plastic dowel as an easy way to hold the clip to install them, after installing pull dowel out and toss it< this was incorrect information.
Correct way (thanks Jon) is to install "X" clip and push dowel into the X" clip until flush, this expands the tangs that hold the clip in place. I can't believe that I did not figure that one out.
