Love:
1. The gorgeous exterior styling.
2. The overall handling and ride.
3. The unquestionable bang-for-the-buck factor, which was the primary reason I bought it.
Hate:
1. The Limp Home mode. If it hasn't bitten you yet, you just don't know how dangerous it can be.
2. The most brake dust I've ever had to deal with on any vehicle we've ever had.
3. The potential for expensive repairs, especially with the electronic modules.

Love:
1: Styling
2: 6 speed ZF trans (for making the 3.0 A LOT quicker than it should be)
3: Old world charm about the interior
Hate:
1: Doesn't hold an alignment
2: Stupid weather strip creaky noise from the sunroof (when closed)
3: Stupid Wiper Design
Oh yea, I also hate the ZF trans for the way it jumps into a lower gear when coming to a stop, or when you roll to an almost stop (like at a yield) then hit the gas to go, it's like it stops to think for a moment.. So I guess I have a Love Hate with the trans...

Love:
Handling and performance - really responsive and agile
Interior - extremely comfortable and attractive
Styling - drop dead gorgeous
Hate:
Brake dust - wheels get dirty even at rest
Potential repair bills - always seems to hang over me even though so far so good.
Hard to maintain - all the covers and the intake manifold design make ordinary maintenance a real chore.

Love:
Handling: Sticks like it's on rails!
Performance: For the money, you can't get better.
Rarity: There isn't one on every street corner!
Styling: People often stop me to tell me that it's sick!
Hate:
Holy brake dust Batman!
No space under the hood. Changing the overflow tank was a B!TCH!
Lack of performance upgrades. I should be able to do more!
Lack of tuners.

From what I've read, it's a "normal" concern that even has it's own website. Google Jaguar Lurch. From what I can gather it is a quirk of the trans. software. It can go away with a reflash and sometimes returns. I've not heard of any real bad failure rates. Also, have read about BMW owners that bitch about the same issue where the ZF 6 speed is concerned. So, I think it has something to do with the driving habits of the owner as well. One funny thing that seems to work for me, keep it in sport mode around town and then try to remember to turn off sport when I get on the highway since sport keeps the trans in 5th. For some reason sports mapping fits my driving style better, and the trans seems to work better. The other thing that is funny is when a tromp on it, it will wind out each gear to an indicated redline, surprising the snot out of many a tuner boy! Latest victim, Mr. Acura TSX with his GF thinking he was driving an M3. Ohhhh Noooo did grandpa just blow by me off that light?!?!
PS: I probably should never get an STR..... I'll end up in jail.

LOVE:
Style - Unique WOW Factor
Comfort - Great Road Trip car
Performance - Not crazy, but the right amount
Dealer Service in Warranty
Aftermarket Drilled-Slotted Rotors & Ceramic Pads
HWY Gas mileage - got 35 once on a 300 mile trip.
HATE:
Cost of Maintenance out of Warranty ($400 for a PVC??)
Transmission (really weird, why cant they fix it)
Hard to hold an Alignment - eats tires if you do not align every 6mo.
I am about to take delivery on my 2nd CPO S-Type. Love that warranty! If I was not worried about this transmission, I would just keep my current ride, even though it has over 120k on it. In black, this is a stunning car.

I checked out that website, www.thelurch.com and none of the two variants apply to me.
"
Variant 1 : The Lurch we experience occurs when you bring the car to a halt in a smooth manner by braking very gently and letting the car come very smoothly to rest. Just before the car has come to a complete rest a little lurch like somebody has gently nudged the car occurs. It feels like a gear is being engaged or disengaged just before coming to rest. This can vary in intensity from a very slight nudge to a powerful jump that rocks the car.
Variant 2 : In addition, when you slow very gently to a creeping halt without actually stopping and then gently try to accelerate - there is a slight hesitation when the engine revs higher, then the gearbox engages the drive wheels with a jolt. This varies from a harsh jolt to snatchy."
The thing I noticed about my tranny is when I am slowing down, foot of the accelerator, it will sometimes (very smoothly) downshift. It doesnt jerk or anything like that, and the only reason that I notice it is because it obviously slows the car down a tad. Who knows, maybe I have it maybe not, just doesnt seem as dramatic as that website describes.

Things I like:
(1) Smooth riding
(2) Std. and optional equip.
(3) Economy (qualified) **
Things I don't like:
(1) Brake dust
(2) Sound system...for a car of this caliber
(3) Power..lack thereof **
** Yes, they have decent economy...but, IMHO, these engines should have been 3.5 liter with around 250-260 hp. Crusing along at ~70 or so with the a/c on and going up a slight incline (mountain foothills), the tranny kicks down to the next lower gear.
My wifes former X-Type didn't have this problem and now, it is a bit annoying.
I'm betting that if these cars originally had the larger engine, many more would have been sold. The 3.0 was good for the X-Type, but NOT the S-Type. Again, my MHO...

Love:
1: the Power! stepping up from the 4.0L to the SC4.2L is Awesome!
2. styling is perfect! I don't ever plan on changing anything about the appearance of my STR (I doesn't need it)
3. Bucket seats that fit like a glove, so that when I want to exercise that C.A.T.S system I'm not sliding all over the place
4. One of the best OEM in dash Navi system I've ever used
Dislikes (hate is too strong a word)
1. Lack of LSD but I'm gonna fix this one
2. quirkiness with some of the sound system controls
3. brake dust (I'm going to fix this also with some akebono pads)

Hi Jeff,
Geezers rock! Since I'm 59, I can say that. I do somewhat the same thing, that is, smoke an unsuspecting rice burner. My last victim was an S2000 on a freeway onramp. I just dropped it into 3rd and drove away from him. You're right about the STR. If I had one, I'd be in an adjoining cell.
