You have the facts. If you don't believe them order the ball joint and report back what happened when you attempted to install them.

Maybe they will work??

I'm not sure when I'll need to replace the ball joints on my car. But when I do I'll let you know the result.

well.. getting fed up with the steering wheel shimmy under braking, going to have the car up on the hoist tomorrow at the shop while doing the new exhaust setup, maybe be able to identify the source of the play leading to shimmy, although I didn't find anything with a pry bar jacked up in the driveway, hoping tomorrow proves more fruitful, although i'm hearing a 'click' from the front end when i throw it into reverse and start backing into a spot... definitely seems like all things point to lower ball joints at this point...

So, I'm basically ordering the welsh enterprises two uprights for the STR... and I'm thinking I might just do the inner and outer tie-rod-ends on both sides while I'm at it, as those are reasonably priced, and who knows if there isn't an issue there too...

ugh, just want my steering to feel right again; inspiring absolutely no confidence right now especially under braking, seems downright dangerous to be honest, pretty soon i'm going to have the upright separate from the wishbone when the ball joint fails, definitely needs to be addressed,

I took Tbird's argument and posed to the vendor on eBay selling 16mm lower ball joint stating it's made for 2003+ Jaguar S Types. Here was the dialogue via eBay system:

me - "Has this ball joint been verified to work on 2005 Jaguar S Type? If so, can you post a link to someone who've installed it? Thank you."

vendor - 'hi. if you do not believe us, you can buy directly from local dealer to peace your mind. - autochassisparts "

Link on eBay to this part from this vendor(the link repeated from my earlier post):

Would be nice to confirm that ^^^ as working, but I somehow doubt it,

I did my lower ball joints last week, (complete upright replacement), didn't fix my issue... sigh... time to move on...

The vendor basically told me to take my busines else where. That is my plan when the time comes to do the ball joint. I posted my experience to share.

Sorry to hear you still have lingering issue with vibration. If it's during braking only, then it warrants to look at the rotors again, although you just replaced them. Perhaps careful measurement with dial indicator? Many cars are sensitive to rotor thickness variation greater than 0.005".

I did rotors, problem didn't change one bit,
goes away under harder braking, and the vibration is still present without any braking, just cruising, around 50mph.

Well good try!
I was hoping you or someone will finally find the proper 2003 and up lower ball joint for our S Types. Seperate from the control arm. They have to be out there somewhere.

Just a thought: could your brake calipers pistons not retract fully? After a drive are there temperature difference between front L/R sides? Easy to do if you have non-contact temperature reader.

I replaced one front left caliper at some point too actually, doubt that's it, it has to be some small bit of play somewhere in the front end, another bushing, or upper ball joints, that comes in at a certain wheel frequency (45-60mph)

Continuing discussion on suitable lower ball joint replacement: how to check if other ball joints from Jaguar parts bin will work?

An example is XJ8 upper ball joint here: Mas Industries BJ24006 Ball Joint Upper Suspension Ball Joint | eBay

It looks tantalizingly similar.

GT42,
Are you by chance able to press out your old ball joint to take some measurements? I can purchase XJ8 ball joint to compare.

BALL JOINT - LOWER JAGUAR S-TYPE 2.7 2004- | eBay - maybe the UK Ebay site has balljoints that will fit? Do the UK models share the suspension? This UK manufacturer http://www.firstline.co.uk/tb/home.php if you register for free for their Webcat application shows all the parts including later model ball joints they manufacture.

My RHS lower ball joint came loose last week and the shop tightened it yesterday. They were new in March 13. The steering felt very wrong. Today the nut came loose again after 50 ks: about 4 turns. I rang the shop and they said they loctited it and used a metre bar.

I just put it back in with loctite and rattle gun. No taper on the shaft just a straight bolt like the pics on Ebay. Can peoples confirm that is right ball joint... Paul

That's the part we are all mauling over - it's the taper below the threaded part that's different between pre-2004 and newer design.

You can see in the eBay link that sjgh linked above(no offense sjgh) that it's straight. It's not the right part for our post 2003 S Types. The newer suspension design uses tapered design like the one I linked above for XJ8.

My ball joint finally seized today and the nut undid itself. I pulled it out using the rattle gun from Milwaukee in about 20m. It was new in Mar 13 but judging by the hammer blows was put in wrongly. The two mechanics told me they fixed it by tightening it and when I asked why was it loose they said " Dont over think it" Der... I also saw the boot was split so no grease didnt help. I found a new BJ for $50 and it looks perfect for a 2000 14 mm straight bolt system.. like all the ball joints are in this model including the steering tie rod end. The existing one in the pic is about 4mm deeper than the other side but the new one looks perfect , Paul
