Default Maintenance Questions

I plan on changing the oil and doing other routine maintenance on my 2003 Jaguar S-type 3.0 with 55,000 miles.

What kind of oil do you use?

What filters do you buy?

Is it too early to change the spark plugs at 60,000 miles?

How about the fuel and air filters?

I've owned 2 X-Types , and, now a S-Type V8. I've always used Castrol GTX oil and Motorcraft filters with no problems. I believe the change interval on the plugs is 100K. Don't know on the fuel filter. Per the advice of others on this forum, I acquired a set of Rhino ramps from Advance Auto. Did my first oil change on the S a couple of weeks ago, and, these ramps made it easy to get under the car and get the belly pan off and back on. When I bought my S, it had about 49K on it, and, the air filter looked pretty dirty. I got a new one from Advance, and, changed it. Don't know if the previous owner had ever changed it or not. Hope this helps.

for oil put some full synthetic oil. if you dont want to spend alot you can get walmart brand supetech full synthetic its like 17$for 5qt jug im actually currentlly using it and it brought the engine noise down compared to my previous oil(pennzoil platinum)I changed my plugs at 40k just for the fact that i was keeping my car for couple years and wanted it to run strong.I also changed the fuel filter at 40k got it from autozone for 12$ and changed it in like 20min.k&n has great filters more power and you never have to buy another filter runs for about 50$

Thank you for the advice. I like what I am reading here. Are there other areas that I should looka at? Maybe radiator or the transmission? What type of oil is recommended for the rear end?

How often should you change the coolant and/or the rear end gear oil?

I use synthetic oil and change every 5k. The trans is sealed and uses a special fluid that costs a mint! I'm not sure about the rear diff. I'm more than likely going to change to a K&N air filter for the better flow. If you do, be careful on how you clean and oil the filter. Done incorrectly, you can end up with an oil film on downstream sensors and really screw things up.

I run the Jaguar-recommended Castrol 5W-30 conventional motor oil and change it every 6,000 miles along with the oil filter. Don't believe the 10,000-mile service intervals published in the Jaguar maintenance schedules - that's a marketing gimmick that over time could do considerable damage to an engine. I use Purolator oil and air filters. They're well-made for a fair price and have a good industry reputation. I don't trust the K&N concept - you read just as many "wish I'd never done that" posts as you do "the greatest thing since sliced bread" posts on the various car forums I frequent....

I have run K&N filters in every car I have owned since 1990. Have had good luck with them. Only once did I over oil and end up having to clean a cars intake. That said, I probably wouldn't put the K/N in the Jag. With this car, I am going to stay mainly stock. The only exception might be the brake pads. The brake dust from the OEM pads is horrible. After a week of driving the wheel is about 75% black. That is unacceptable.

Yes, I change the oil every 5,000-7000 miles. 10,000 is simply too many miles.
