So, I am curious if anyone's ever done it? It is a very common thing in the BMW world (my M5 has it) and it sounds great. Growls when you step on it and a nice melody when I cruise, without being obnoxious.

Basically, chop off the two rear mufflers, run a straight pipe and weld some tips.

Any sound clips?
When I searched I came up with STR's (no V6's) and most of them had magnaflows.

Thanks..

BmwM5lover, I believe some of us have deleted the rear boxes to only reinstall due to an overbearing drone in the cabin. I personally haven't performed this but others who tried may chime-in. Thanks otherwise.

Bacardi 151 had them on his STR and believe that they are for sale in the Private Sale section of the forum.

I did it to mine. Drone is low in cabin at freeway speeds (the wind noise is louder at 80mph). Car is still pretty quiet even without the rear mufflers. When I took it to the Texas Mile earlier this year, there were a few people that wanted to know if it still had the stock exhaust on it because it was so quiet.

Hmm, sounds like it may not be a bad way to go then. Ill have to give it a try and see I guess.

Are the mufflers clamped on, or do they need to be cut?

Mufflers are clamped on, that is actually what I did first to see how bad it would sound. You can pull them off in about 10 mins a side just to see what it will sound like. On a side note, I did the same thing to my 540i/6 back when I had it.

How did you find the sound to be with the removed mufflers on the Jag
?

I like it. It is def louder, but not as louder than the Mustang (long tubes, x-pipe, single chamber mufflers).

Mike. Do you have hi-flow cats, x-pipe, delete center resonator? In other words; what exhaust do you have aside from no rear boxes?

O.k. just to clarify the OP has a 3.0.

So on that note I can chim in and say you will not like the sound. I did it when I first baught the car looking for more note. WOT it sounds GREAT, at itel it sounds GREAT. Everything else sounds like ***. I was embarresed to drive it normal, and it is WAY too slow to go WOT every time. If you like the Honda Civic Coffee can exhaust with a Ironing Board bolted on the truck lid thing then you might like it.

Edit: BTW, you can test this in less then 10 min. Just remove the rear section and go for a ride. The extra pipe and tips wont change the DB or sound much at all.

Wait a minute! Shultz brings up a very important point. bmwlover has a 3.0 V6, not a good motor when messing around with exhaust...very difficult to quiet down. I had an 02 X-Type 3.0. Modded the exhaust and regretted it. Bolted on lower restrictive exhaust manifolds from a 1989 Ford Taurus, placed a single dual inlet/single outlet cat from a late model Dodge truck V8 under the passenger floorboard. The stock cats cook these engines because they are directly bolted to the side of the block. I mistakenly used one duel inlet/single outlet cat from a Dodge V8. She flowed but the interior cabin noise/drone was very annoying and impossible to quiet down. If you must; use two inexpensive aftermarket "regular" cats, place one after the other (can't place side by side) under the passenger floorboard (this was performed by X owners). Don't use Magnaflow hi-flow cats, you'll lose too much back pressure. You may try this arrangement using the stock mufflers, then try aftermarket mufflers...My experience pal.

If it is truly that simple to remove the rear boxes, then I will give it a try. I mainly wanted newer tips, figured the sound would be a bonus.

If sound is what your after, then remove the center resonator and pop on a set of Borlas's or whatever. You'll pick up a few ponies and the sound will be throatier with a droneless cabin.

I had them on a stock STR, no idea how'd they'd sound on a 3.0. There was a little drone on the highway, I didn't mind it, nor did my passengers...They're sort of still for sale but I have them in my possession until mid December...They're sitting in storage 1000 miles away...lol
