My Love/Hate Relationship
Hello All,
I'm a long time viewer but a 1st time poster. I have an 05 S-Type R- black with black/dove interior- 30K miles, that I've owned for about a year. This is the sweetest car I've ever owned. I love the way it looks and the silky smooth power.
I do have one complaint; I can't keep this thing out of the shop. It's been in the shop 8 times within the last year. The throttle body was replaced twice, the transmission was re-flashed 3 times, the passenger headlight was replaced, the foot peddles were replaced, the oil separator was replaced, and the steering wheel sensor was replaced.
As I write, the car's back in the shop to have the drivers headlight replaced, rear differential worked on, and damaged belts replaced.
You'd think this car had been ragged out from all the issues it's had but the car looks pristine. It's the only car that I've had that I can honestly say is perfect on the interior and dang near perfect on the exterior.
My big fear is this- my warranty runs out in 5 days. What do I do? Is this thing always going to be a "gremlin"? Should I get the extended warranty or should I pay as problems come along?
Any help is appreciated.

I would also say get the extended warranty!! I have a 2005 STR with 47K miles and also have had it about a year. I have had very little go wrong at all? In 2005 Jaguar was in the top 3 brands for quality/reliability. I think you might have got a "problem" car. Any chance you got a Carfax before you purchased it?

After doing significant research before buying our S-Type last December, I opted not to purchase an extended warranty for our 2005 3.0 V6 model. But I used the remainder of the factory warranty back in May, June, and July to have our local dealership get the car into tip-top shape. The factory warranty expired on July 18th. So far, so good....
Had we purchased an STR instead, I definitely would have sprung for the extended warranty. But my wife is the primary driver of this car, she doesn't need an STR (or even know what one is), and I was not willing to spend the significant extra money required to maintain and insure one. Unfortunately, the STR demands a much deeper maintenance budget than the regular S-Type does. If you're going to keep the car, you should shop around for a good third-party extended warranty....

My car was a one owner and had a perfect car fax. This car must be a problem child. I picked it up from the dealership today and on the way home, I found out that if I turn the Rear Defroster on while I have the radio on, the radio losses signal. It looks like I'm heading back tomorrow.
Just a note: I've only put 3K miles on the car in a year and I've never driven it in the rain or at night, so I'm just now finding problems after driving it in the rain and at night.

Yes. That problem has been mentioned before. The problem is that the radio uses the rear defroster grid as its antenna. I could not find the TSB in my collection but hopefully the dealer will have it and get you fixed up. Just to check does the reception get better when the rear defroster is turned off?

From what I have seen every Jag (and bimmer, merc, etc) has plenty of issues. If you don't now you will later.
Buy an aftermarket extended warranty. I have not used the Jag one but have had one on an 03 and 04 STR from different companies.
Both have been very good. On the 03 the warranty has paid out well over 6k in repairs and I think I paid about 3k for it. Well worth it!

Get a Warranty.
Or you will also be: Also,
Replacing the Nav/Touch screen, Air bag sensors, More headlight motors, Belts, a pulley, which will require all new pulleys, rear end whine, abs module, dash pack, bushings for front and rear and on and on.. Once its in the shop for one thing they find another and the bills are in thousands, not hundereds. Love the car, hate all the expensive little problems.
