It raises shift points under normal operation 500rpm, (I ALWAYS RECOMMEND YOU LEAVE IT ON FOR THE FOLLOWING>>) the big difference is when you pull in another lane right in front of the semi going alot faster than you. When you punch it, it will drop down 2 gears instead of 1, giving you much faster acceleration away from him. There by saving you and your occupants lives,,,,,,,,,,,you can thank me now

I've found using the Sport button makes the throttle too tempting use sensibly. Too much fun. I have experimented trying to use it as an overdrive switch when getting above 50 mph going from Sport to Normal but the DC area traffic makes a bit cumbersome. My wife uses it exclusively though.

I thought the sport mode was on of those set it and forget it things. It is in my car.
After managing to barely eek out 20mpg average over 9k miles that I've had the S-type, I've also regretted not getting the V8 version, mostly because I tend to drive the v6 aggressively enough to impact fuel consumption to the point where it is to the claimed mileage of the v8.
Now, the thing is, once you get the v8 under your foot, do things just go downhill from there? Do you get used to that power as the new norm, and drive it just as aggressively, (or more so cause it's more fun), than the v6, and mileage goes downhill from there?

I think your mpg depends primarily on three factors:
1. Driving style
2. Highway driving vs. city traffic
3. Geography
If you're an extremely aggressive driver, it won't matter whether you're in the V6 or V8. Your gas mileage will be lousy. If your car is mostly a highway cruiser like ours is, and you keep it relatively fast but steady on the freeway, your mpg will be superb in both the V6 and the V8. And if you live in mountainous terrain, your gas mileage will suffer because of the extra work your car has to do. The V8 may have a bit of an advantage there....

I last looked at MPG about a year ago out of curiosity and was getting 16-18 around town and high 20s on a run I cant remember but will have to do it again just to satisfy my curiosity again, I use mine every day but work near so only filling her up every other week when the range counter gets near 50 miles, I did have a V6 Mondeo and that only did about 22 around town so its not a lot different MPG wise

I leave my 2005 STR in "Sport" 100% of the time. I purchased a powerful rear wheel car for a reason. I want it to perform. I seem to get about 16-18 mpg in town average. About 22-24 mpg on hwy. I have never got the highway MPG that others have?? It is also the fastest top end car I have ever had. I have not hit the 155 mph limiter but have seen over 150 mph. The car is shocking smooth at those speeds.
Do I use the power? Yes a good bit. I don't get a full throttle take off everyday but when I need it boy does it FEEL great!! Passing is so addictive!! The car is so quiet and smooth I had to really recalibrate my driving. It is VERY easy to over launch and be in someone's trunk before you know what happened!! I came from a SHO which was pretty peppy and I had extensively modified the drive train and suspension. I still don't think of the STR as "Fast". It is quicker than I think because it's quiet. I only get small burn outs and really thought the car would do more? No trace of axle hop and the thing just launches!! Sticky tires and a properly designed suspension work together very well!!
Jaguar did soften the car a good bit. Mainly with the engine programming and the overly restrictive stability control. I hope someone will put the 6 cylinder rear gear in and get it to work!! This 2.87 rear gear is way high.

I actually got to "test" that out once. My dealer had a few S Types in the loaner fleet. When they had the car for the sill repair my loaner was an 06 V8... That is why I always knock on the "I shoulda gotten a V8". My driving style stayed the same. And yes, I hammered it getting on the highway, passed, drove my normal "your gonna get a ticket" style. I got exactly the same average MPG over the week that I got in my 6. The car however had to work a lot less to give me the results I wanted. This is true with any car. There is a sweet spot where power to weight gets you the best compromise of mpg and performance. Take the Accord....My cousin had a 4cyl sedan based on the 4cyl coupes I had..He then traded it for the V6..He gets better mpg numbers in the 6 than he got in the 4...
