Default Mystery Misfire

Hello everyone,

I am having issues with my 2003 Jaguar S-type 3.0 and am hoping you can help.

The issue is a misfire on cylinder 5. It is causing a rough idle, reduced power, and won't rev past 3k rpm.

Below is a list of all that I have done in an effort to fix the issue.
1) Replaced ALL spark plugs
2) Replaced the coil pack on cylinder 5
3) Replaced the fuel filter
4) Replaced the battery
5) Tested all fuel injectors with aligator clips and 9v battery as well as with a multimeter (15.2). They all sprayed well.
6) Replaced the upper and lower manifold gaskets.
7) Replaced bank 2 knock sensor
8) Checked all 3 fuse boxes and all fuses by pulling out each fuse and inspecting manually. All passed.
9) Cleaned MAF sensor with MAF cleaner.
10) Replaced air filter
11) Cleaned throttle body intake intake with throttle body cleaner.
12) Removed upper O2 sensor on bank 2 and ran the car. Misfire still occurred.

Below are pictures of the codes I am having (read bottom to top). I believe the picture showing the cylinders position is correct and cylinder 5 is the middle cylinder on the drivers side but I'd like to confirm with you. The pictures after (above) that show the O2 sensor voltage which is 0.0 for position 1 on bank 1 and 2 which I thought was interesting. Also, the 12.7v picture is showing the voltage of the new battery.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am still riding around in it as it is my only means of transportation.

The cylinder numbering system was revised with the 2002.5 MY in GB and 2003 MY here in the States...

All P1 codes are make-specific and that tool should know better than to put some random make's meanings to mislead you.

Look them all up for your car. (Never trust that tool.)

"Intercooler pump driver fault" on a V-6, interesting but not at all likely... I suspect spurious codes thrown by low battery voltage and the code reader's misinterpretation thereof...

Doh! Beat me to it. I was just looking up the cylinder numbering.

That means good news and bad news. I'll start with the bad news: You changed the wrong coil. Now the good news: You changed the wrong coil.

The misbehaving cylinder is on the US passenger side, closest to the.firewall. The ignition coil is the most likely culprit, so replacing that one should hopefully clear up the P0305 code.

Was your Check Engine light flashing? I believe it was, due to the P1313 code. If the light is flashing, do NOT drive the car. A catalytic converter is on the threshold of heat damage. The flashing is designed to get your attention, meaning that a relatively minor fault is about to get expensive really quickly. If this is your only vehicle, make other arrangements to get around until you can fix the P0305 code and resulting P1313.

Most of the other codes point to low voltage. Those are minor faults compared to P0305 and P1313. Work those two first. Your prestart battery voltage looks good, but what about when the engine is running? On a 2003+ model, you should see around 14.5v right after engine start, settling down around 13.5v after a few minutes.

What's the recent history of the car? Are these all new faults? Was this a derelict dragged from a field and you're trying to revive it? Or was it meticulously maintained by a retired Jaguar mechanic? Somewhere in between? Just curious about any recent work and how this slew of faults all started. I suspect a coil failed and caused P0305 and P1313, but all of the others have me scratching my head if the charging system and battery are okay.

On an unrelated note, did anybody else have this thread appear way out of sequence? It's dated mid-day Sunday, but didn't appear for me until Monday morning.

I changed the ignition coil on cylinder 5 just now and that seems to have fixed the issue!

I cleared the codes so we will see if a CEL comes back after driving it for a while. Time will tell,

I bought the car in 2018 with 66k miles on it. It was owned by a mechanic who bought it from a widow. It was her husbands car and she didn't want to get rid of it because of the memories that came with it. At the same time, she wanted to get rid of it because it was taking up space. Long story short she sold it to the mechanic who took good care of it who eventually sold it to me.

The thread issue is because I posted this Sunday but the post had to be approved by the moderators who did not approve this until Monday.

Again, Thank you all for the help! I feel a little stupid for not being able to diagnose such a simple issue but I learned a lot and can now take of the plenum in no time.
