Need Oil Pan Gasket? Maybe Not!

Need Oil Pan Gasket? Maybe Not!
I've had this car about a month and it's been dripping oil in my driveway.
I've also researched and read the threads about oil pan gasket leaks.
The first shop I took it to put it on a lift, removed the cover, and determined that it was indeed the oil pan gasket since there was no oil on the engine above the pan. He quoted $450 for the job.
Then I called my trusted mechanic who had worked on my other cars to see if he was familiar with Jags. He said he was and quoted me $420.
Then I called a Jaguar specialist in the area, whom I didn't know and was quoted $525.
Yesterday, I scheduled an independent mechanic to do the job for $300.
He got under the car and decided to check the torque on the oil pan bolts and found several of them LOOSE!!!! Then he checked the oil drain plug and found that it wasn't tight.
Afterwards he left the car running for about 30 minutes, saw no sign of oil and declared that it was OK. He washed off the engine cover, put it back on and charged me $40!!!
Only time will tell if this was a long term solution but: The Moral of the story to me: Always check the basics before assuming it's a major job.
