Default New Jaguar owner needs advice!

Hey guys... I just joined after weeks of viewing the topics. I just bought a 2000 Jaguar S type 3.0. It has 73000 miles and looks amazing. Im having the most common issues I see everyone having on here, I fell in love with it. Been doing lots of work to it and lots to go. Just need some advice I cant seem to get a straight answer on after a week of scanning forums.

1st one.... After reading on this topic for some time I am still unclear.... I am going to change the trans fluid. At 73000 miles I think its time. After the car warms up it dont seem to shift as smooth. I know how tough the job is and all that I just dont know what fluid to use... I know some people say I can use Mercon V. Now I dont want to flush it all, Ive seen what that can do to a trans. If I drain 4 to 5 quarts of fluid is that good enough? Can Mercon V be mixed with the original Jaguar fluid? I am ordering the filter online, is there a good one you all can recommend? Any tips and tricks you all can offer? The car is in great shape 0 rust and paint looks brand new.... headlights arent cloudy and it has a mesh grill in it that makes it look mean. I am in love with this car! I have had Saabs, Mercedes and just about every other car out there but this one caught me for some reason!

2nd question... I am having the common heat on one side and cold on the other and as Ive read I think its the Heater control valve. I have also read I can order one from a Lincoln LS? Is this correct? Any advise on this would be helpful also!

Thx again from a newbie Jag owner!!

Mark,
I've moved your pist over to the S Type section.
You can use the Lincoln valve but yours will be the earlier 5 hose type.

The trans oil spec is in JTIS (& probably various posts maybe even the FAQs) which is $6 or so from ebay... It's a common trans (Ford 5R55N) so any trans shop should be OK servicing it (DIY if you're up to it). No need to use a jag franchise.

Good idea to change it, but realise often a trans is unhappy due to a minor (or major!) engine problem. Major ones cause codes but not always minor ones. So you could find that the change doesn't fix the problem. Just come back here if it doesn't (Diagnosis without codes is tougher.)

You should be OK with using a good quality Mercon V trans fluid (like Castrol) or Motorcraft.
