New (to me) S-type
Hi all this is my first post. I am new to jaguar ownership and recently picked up an ‘08 S-type 3.0 V6. Always loved the car, as I got to learn how to drive on a family members ‘01 s-type.
Mine has 57k miles on it and so far has been a dream to drive. I cannot get over how well this thing drives—not to mention the style of the car, seems to only have improved with age.
Anyway, though the car is a delight to drive, I do have two problems I am hoping to find some guidance on:
1. Pesky engine coolant level low error. I’ve checked the coolant and it doesn’t actually look low from what I can tell.
2. Being relatively simple in my understanding of vehicles, this one is a bit hard for me to describe in words but…basically there are times when I press the gas after a rolling stop, and the car jerks forward pretty hard.
It pretty much happens at the same intersections without fail. It does not usually happen if I come to a complete stop.
Related to this, sometimes when I am breaking for a stop light the car seems to inch forward ever so slightly after I’ve fully braked, but I didn’t take my foot off the brake.
Am I going crazy?
Anyway, here’s my new (to me) S-type, I am certainly head over heels.

Whats good,
coolant issues are notorious, but easy to fix.
Assuming you get the error, but you have coolant in the expansion tank, its the little sensor or its cable.
simoly unscrew the tanks right and only screw, and pull it upwards, it will come 3 inches enough space to take out the sensor and check it.
the jerks are tranny small issues.
i used to have them, but they got better as i changed the filter pan and transmission oil (lifeguard 6 or the shell identical product only)
gravitational method. Then you dive it normally 100 miles and its gonna be better (for the parameters to readapt)
some dampers and gaskets go bad inside the transmission it makes pressure unstable, but thats very common with age, and shouldn't be so bad if you change your oil.
Most zf6hp trannies have these issues by now

...and don't worry about pulling the coolant tank sensor out: This will not result into coolant flowing out there, as the sensor does not sit in the fluid itself.
Doing a ATF "gravitational method" only, would mean you are doing only half an ATF fluid change - pretty pointless. Do a full flush of the ATF;

or another way for the full flush would be as I just did it on my X308:

but yess a full change is better also he gets to check the cooler lines for possible leaks.
Also if at it, change the TCM connector's sleeve.
my sleeve was leaking an the plug lost connection, and they wanted to charge me hundreds of euros for a new tranny and jgate... haha.
So do check all these gaskets and weak spots.
they posted the workshop manuals so info on the sensors there.
and lots of topics regarding tranny issues
the intersection thing was funny ah🤣🤣

The coolant level sensor is not available as a separate part from Jaguar, but is from Land Rover for their cars of a similar vintage:

More details about the coolant level sensor here:

Ignore the early posts in the thread. Some mouth-breathing chucklehead had no idea what he was talking about, but finally did figure out the sensor has a reed switch activated by a floating magnet. In that case, the magnet was stuck to the bottom of the reservoir and didn't rise up when refilled.

reg. post from El Darius: Yes, indeed. swapping the sleeve is very important - I did not especially mention that, because it is all in my thread reg. the ATF change S-Type. This, plus also changing the "adapter valve body", which could well be another reason for your transmission troubles.
And yes, the sensor is available on it's own. I had to learn that the hard way, when an ebay seller posted an unclear listing - I thought I ordered the whole expansion tank, but I got the sensor only. Compare the prices for sensor only and whole tank. It may make more sense to buy the whole tank rather than the sensor only - if you decide you need a new sensor...
